I was also thinking Sacrifice II. At that point, that could have been a good, but sad point, that Gabrielle would leave the show. If Gabrielle was not going to be seen again and she did die at the end of that episode, then I would have wanted Xena to journey into the afterlife just to say one last goodbye to her friend.

Oh, that's interesting XenAres! I like the idea of Gabrielle's reincarnated soul.

I do think that IOM would have been a good one, too, for the ending of her character.

What if Gabrielle left the show without dying?

I could see that as a possibility during season 4 when both Xena and Gabrielle were considering their lives together despite how different their paths in life were.

I could almost see that, at some point later on in the season after Gabrielle had chosen to follow the way of peace, that both she and Xena come to an agreement about their paths and how different they are. Traveling around with a warrior in the attempt to do good would be a bad place in life for Gabrielle because she doesn't fight. Xena would not want to cause her pain (both by seeing the fighting and also, by putting her in danger). So, they would both realize that, as they are, their paths are just too different.

It would be a very sad ending to see them split up but it would be better than having Gabrielle die. Maybe Gabrielle does decide to start a hospice and Xena promises to visit her often. That way, we could have guest appearances from Gabrielle and still have the friendship between them, but without her being in every episode and traveling on the road with Xena.

I think that could have worked well, too, xenacrazay. Yes, it was Kindred Spirits.

I think having Gabrielle rule as Queen of the Northern Amazons while Xena left might have worked out. I'm not sure that a situation like that would lead to Gabrielle being gone from the rest of the show, but I could see it working (and it could have been interesting if it had) if she were gone for a few eps or something.

The sad thing about this scenario would be that, if he episodes played out as they did, then Gabrielle would have been gone while Xena faked her death and was put on ice. Gabrielle would have grown 25 years older while Xena was on ice.

Actually, it might have made for some interesting storytelling, to somehow have Gabrielle appear as a guest after the 25 years, older than Xena.
