For those of you who just can't get enough Amazon info, I was perusing one of my favorite websites, The Straight Dope,, and found a nice little synopsis of Amazon legend and the current status of archeological knowledge -

Oh that's awesome! It really does summarize most of the extant literary sources, and refers to the graves of presumed warrior women that have been found in Asia Minor. A nice place to refer those who are convinced that there really were Amazons (whose memory has been kept suppressed by a vast male conspiracy, aided by Rosicrucians, Masons, and the Trilateral Commission.
 ) I love the description of the etymology-buffs: "The list goes on. Anybody can do it. All it takes is a shelf-load of ancient-language dictionaries and a predisposition to self-delusion." |
