It all starts with that one damn line from Rekoning, we all know it, we hate it (mostly): Xena: "I used to wonder what you looked like." Fans all over took this to mean that this is Xena and Ares first meeting. Had I watched the series in order, maybe I would have thought the same till later in the show when it became very obvious that they had to know each other. (Not to mention the scenes the had in Armegeddon Now where they were talking together while Xena's army was going after Cirra) However, the show continued to add little bits that proved they had a past, they had to. The very next episode with Ares, Ties that Bind: "I thought about it for a
long time. What could I do to win you
back? Money? Power? What was your weakness? And then it came to me-- Daddy! It-- was so glorious."-Ares, how does he
know about Daddy being an issue for her “What is a father, Xena before the episode? Later same episode: "“What is a
father, Xena? A man who guides you; who
teaches you how to live your life." -Ares. "When did he do that?
Certainly not in the show. Intimate Strangers: "A/C: “But you are coming home-- back where you’re
loved and needed-- back where you belong.” What's that love and need in season
2 (nice set up for season 5 I think, wanted to add it in? Hm. next episode: Ten Little Warlords: "Your once mentor and
still greatest fan"-Ares. Mentor? When did that happen? Not in the show.
Xena Scrolls: Ares: “Tsk! Oh-- I’m in your blood. You know you can’t fight me.” X: “Ares, the answer is no.” Ares: “Why don’t you-- just give me what I’ve
wanted for centuries?” We all know it wasn 't the sword in the gut she gave him
when they were about to kiss. And the only way he is in her blood is through a
past because yes they played with the idea of her being his daughter, but they
dropped it like it's hot pretty quick, the last mention was Furies and then never again.
Season 3:Usually not considered a heavy shipper season because of their constant fighting , but it sure does show a history. Dirty Half Dozen: Ag: "Xena?" Ares: "Yeah." Ag: "The former number one Ares femme-- the owner of the-- of the chakram?" Ares: "Others have made the mistake of underestimating her." Ag: "No, no, no, no, War God-- nobody underestimates Xena. They underestimate you. You've got a-- hot spot for the killer babe, and when push comes to shove, you follow your, uh-- _lower_ instincts-- know what I mean?" Ares [Ares-laugh]: "You are smarter than you look-- and you're not frightened of me. It's annoying, but-- it sets you apart from the others I've dealt with." Ag: "Except Xena. She didn't cut you any slack, either. Whatever-- I need your word, or whatever it is that binds you god-types." SO Xena was Ares' number 1? When? Not in the show. She never cut Ares any slack? When? Not in the show, well she didn't really cut him any slack in the show either except Ten Little Warlords. . Well she continued to always stand up to him but not to such an extreme at this point that other's would have heard about it. And my favorite from the episode: Ares: "Doesn't matter. Agathon is brash, obnoxious, disrespectful, and smart-- very smart--much like the young Xena I took under my wing." Hmm, full blown statement of fact from Ares that he taught a young Xena. From my favorite episode of all time, The Quill Is Mightier: Ares: "Oh, yeah. I taught her that. When she came to me, she was just another lost warlord, hungry to kill. I gave her a purpose." Yes another statement from Ares that Xena was his student. So much proof.I’m gonna throw this in from Bitter Suite just to show how well Ares knows what is in Xena’s heart and head: Ares- “This whole atonement kick you’ve been on lately – it’s not you. You’re full of fire—bending the world to your will—full of rage. And revenge. Accept it, Xena. Embrace it. You know what to do—who to kill.” Sense the rest of the episode shows Ares as something other than himself (maybe, it could have been him, I like to think it's him), I won’t quote him, though it shows allot. Maybe he is Xena’s hallucination of Ares, maybe it’s something put together to manipulate her in the best way possible. And that best way, no matter how you look at it is that Ares is used to manipulate Xena, a hot, sensual, singing, dancing, over sensualized version of Ares. And whether this was a hallucination in Xena’s mind which says quite a bit about her or it was someone using Ares to manipulate Xena it doesn’t matter because Ares was being used to teach Xena a way to get over her hatred of Gabrielle. I will leave out Forget me Not because he was a figment most of the time. Sacrifice (Certainly not a huge shipper episode though it does have some great screenshots): Ares: “Can you hear me? Can you? You and Callisto killed Strife. You tried to kill me. But as you’ve probably figured out-- I forgive you. Xena’s not finished, you know. When she puts her mind to killing someone, they generally get killed. I know. I gave her that focus. I suggest-- that you do something to discourage her.” Again he admits that he gave Xena her focus. On the show? No, before the show. Sacrifice 2: Talking to Gabs: Ares: “Never gives up-- ” Male Voice: “Yeah!” Ares: “Even when it’s hopeless. Time was, it was a quality I admired about her.” Past tense. Later in the episode: X: “Ares-- I know you’re here, ‘cause my skin is crawling. Show yourself.” Ares: “You’re the only mortal I know who can do that.” Doesn’t that speak of something between them? And she could do it from the beginning as long as he wasn’t using another identity (Atrius, Hooded man, Man in the bar (judgement day in Herc, which I would love to quote but no transcript that I can find, Cyrene in Intimate Strangers)
Season 5 has so many so this could be a huge one. But I will start with Chakram. Now I would have LOVED the full story of how Ares stole the Dark Chakram and when he gave it to Xena and how she learned to use it. It would have been a wonderful story for Xena to tell Gabs on the way back to Greece because I'm sure Gabby was wondering. He stole the Dark Chakram for Xena. For her. And if the Light Chakram had some requirements around it then I’m sure the Dark one did too and whatever they were, Ares met them. And Kal is pissed at Ares over it and blames him for everything, “Ares: "Are you still mad about me stealing the dark chakram? That was years ago!" Kal: "If you hadn't-- then none of this would have happened. Xena-- teaming up with Eli." This shows us that not only was Ares involved in some way with Xena, but involved enough that a God from another pantheon knew about her. Later bath tub scene. The scene itself speaks allot. Xena is naked, vulnerable, but she trusts him enough to stay in the tub with him because in her gut she trusts him and wants him. Back to quotes of proof: Ares: "Oh, yeah. It's all about you and me, Xena-- not Kal, not even Zeus. Just the two of us-- bringing peace-- and order to the world-- through force-- something you and I were destined to do-- together." Destined, I’m gonna leave it at that. Succession (again on the surface not a big shipper episode until you look deeper. I hated this episode at first watch, I love it now): Ares: "Mavican-- you are _way_-- outta your league. You have no idea what my standards are. So why don'tcha go back to that little gang of bandits you're leading-- and leave the world domination to professionals-- OK?" Mav: "I'm serious, Ares. I don't know what Xena had to say or do to get the job-- but I want it." Ares: "First-- it is _not_ a job. Second-- Xena never asked me for anything. That's how I knew she was the one. Now-- I've got som'in real important to deal with-- but I'll come back later. Don't be here." This says so much for one small conversation. It was obviously common knowledge that Xena had “the job” and she got it because for her it wasn’t a job and Xena never asked for anything, she did what needed to be done. She didn't ask Ares to help her or to lead her around, no she did it herself. She put herself in that role. Later, same episode: Ares: "I didn't ask if you wanted a choice. Maybe she's got a point. Is there someone better than you? Don't you think I've waited long enough to find out?" Obviously Xena was considered to be “working” for him. Same episode (wow this has allot…) Ares: "No-o-o-o-- watch my _old_ girlfriend fight. I've missed it." Girlfriend? Ok, another admission from Ares that him and Xena had a past. Again: Ares: "You're not jealous? I mean, despite what Mavican thought, I have been thinking about your heir. And who better-- than one you trained?" Xena’s heir in Ares service, thus showing that Xena worked for Ares. And again: Ares: "What I need-- what I think I've always needed, is someone-- strong enough to lead people. I think the key is to find someone-- who's learned how to fight-- but has the discretion not to. Now, there's something Xena never had." Well, Xena now has some discretion so I’d have to guess that he’s referring to evil, wild Xena because she was all about kicking @$$ and taking names...ahh forget the taking names. And the kicker from this episode: X: "Years ago, Ares said to me that anyone who asked for his help doesn't deserve it. So, when Mavican asked-- " Years ago, so back in Xena’s past because we never heard him say that to her. Then Ares said to me, thus showing that they were having some sort of conversation. You can argue that he wasn’t really there but with so much evidence to the contrary already being shown… Seeds of Faith: X: "So, you're worried that this could be the beginning of—the twilight." So this is the first it’s ever been mentioned, never mentioned with Dahok (kinda odd), not something Herc told Xena and Xena isn’t one to read and Gab didn’t know about it. Thus it must have come from Ares at some point. Later we learn it was prophesized by the Fates meaning the knowledge had to come from a God, which would most likely be Ares. And now, now, we start the whole Ares loves Xena. Allot of the quotes I’ve used have shown his growing fondness for her, but I’m not arguing his love for her at this point. I’m arguing that they DID have a past. I could also make up a huge thing about his love for her and her fondness for him. But we'll go on. Ares while speaking to Zeus about Zeus killing Xena and Ares killing Herc. Zeus mentioned that Hercules had earned mortals respect in every way but fear: Ares: "And Xena has earned mine. So I guess we both have something to lose. Well, Dad-- what's it gonna be?" Xena earned his respect, I’m going to guess it wasn’t recently because they’ve been on different sides, thus it must have been in the past. And let’s not forget the walk through Tartarus, Xena: “The time for you and me has been and gone." This means at one point there was a time for them, sometime in the past before the show started. I’m leaving out Eternal Bonds (and all it's wonderfulness) sense most of it is about his current love and dream sequences. Amphipolis Under Seige, again mostly about Ares current love for Xena and her need to use him, but this stands out quite nicely: Ares: "You're up to something. I have desired you from the very time I saw you in battle. And now? After all these years, after all these games-- the cat and the mouse-- will I, won't I--`Ares, I'm yours. Take me.' Well, I'm sorry, it's too easy." Through the show, at least until this point there have been no games between Xena and Ares, no cat, no mouse. She has played him as a warrior, but not as a lover, which is what this refers to and as far as I know you can’t play those type of games without physical contact. And he admits that he desired her from the first time he saw her in battle which means he watched her for quite some time. Later with Gabrielle, Ares shows his knowledge of Xena’s habits: Ares: "Do you think-- she'd really give herself to me to save Eve?" G: "Has she ever said anything she doesn't mean?" Ares: "Thank you." Livia: Ares: "The moment it hit me, I knew. I don't know why I didn't see it before, but I didn't-- I swear." X: "And that's supposed to make it OK?" Ares: "No-- it's supposed to make you see that it wasn't personal." X: "It doesn't get more personal than when you corrupt my daughter the way you did me." Ares: "See? That is just my point. It's not the same. Nobody's the same as you, Xena, not for me." A full on statement from Xena admitting that Ares corrupted her at some point in her past. Whether this is after the battle of Corteese or after the battle of Corinth (the more popular belief) we don't know.
Now the person I was using this against chose to back down for the first time ever so I think I did a good job making a point. My question to my shipper friends: Do I make sense? Does this argument work? Did I miss anything? Anyone else really happy I got that certain person to stop at least for the moment? And now I have this on a thread so when that person starts again I can copy and paste it and change the wording to fit the argument. Was I wrong to respond so harshly (I had to take out a few snide comments before posting it here, the full version is in the Ares/Livia thread)?
I hate that line in Reckoning, hate it and I love everything that happens between Xena and Ares, but that one line has caused such a headache over the years. The last time the big Reckoning debate happened we had shippers saying they didn't have a past and I ended up leaving the board because I felt so ostracized. Not this time though, I have too many new friends and I spent too much time trying to drag life back into this board because when I came back it was dying, new threads weren't around, people weren't talking Xena and it hurt to see XOC start to die. Too many other sites and fans have disapeared. But I will be staying away from the main board because I don't need the stress of dealing with that certain person. And if the admins were still watching the boards closely like they used to, that thread would have been shut down long before I got to it and that person would have already been in trouble for bringing the same argument into any conversation with Ares in it.
