It was fully expected. I figured after the second season finale that the third would be the last. There was, figuratively speaking, only a year left in the slave revolt. The revolt itself only lasted two years.

Once they announced Crassus joining season three, I figured that the third would be the last. They couldn't continue it on without dragging out the revolt.

History says he died, though his body was never found and how he died remains a question.

Well, part of the problem is that not much is known about him. He did exist, historians agree on that. They also agree that he was a gladiator, maybe even a military leader at some point. They believe he died in battle, which I suspect is how the series will end.

Histories from that time are not terribly reliable and often contradict themselves. (Which is why one of my old professors had such a big problem with the claim that the series was "historically accurate." Accurate to their historians, but can be disputed in other academic circles.)
