Warning- major spoilers!



I've heard that comparison a lot. (the Battle Royale)- similar concept I guess, but the Hunger Games movie is based on Suzanne Collins book trilogy, and they are really good books.

My initial impressions of the Hunger Games movie:

Well, I really enjoyed it. Of course it was easy to nit pick all the differences between the book and movie, and mostly I think they did a really good job of being faithful to the book. Most of the changes were necessary to fit into movie format. I did feel like the actual Hunger Games felt kind of rushed. I get that they had to hurry things for the movie, but it still felt way too rushed for me, as if it all happened in about 3 days when in the book it took weeks (or it felt that way anyhow).

The reaping scene was perfect I thought. It really sent chills down my spine when Katniss volunteered and Prim was screaming for her.

I didn't understand why they made it so Peeta's leg was healed at the end...in the book he was almost dead at the end and he ended up losing his leg. Not sure if they're just going to skip that entirely?

The Mutt's were a bit disappointing, not at all like the book. But...overall a good adaptation of the book. I loved Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Rue was perfect, and I kinda fell in love with the Katniss/Peeta relationship in a whole new way after seeing them together. They were really sweet together and I could see Katniss really start to have feelings for him, you could see it in her eyes.

Rue's death was watered down a lot, the brutality of it. It still hit home when Katniss decorated her body with flowers and sang to her, and showing Katniss' grief afterwards. And when District 11 gave her that salute. Not a dry eye in the theater after that.

I loved Cinna, Effie and Woody Harrelson as Haymitch was so good- he was a bit too sober, though. lol.

I loved seeing places like the seam and the Capitol come to life. Loved the part at the training center when Haymitch sees the children of some Capitol officials playing and pretending to kill each other- basically play acting the Hunger Games as if it was entertainment. The look of disgust on Haymitch's face was perfect.

I also really loved seeing the other side of things during the games- the game makers manipulating things in the game, like the fire balls, and even seeing Gale's face when Katniss kissed Peeta...hilarious! We didn't get to see those things in the books because it was all from Katniss' perspective. The movie allows us to see events from other perspectives, which is cool.

I want to go see the movie again, and am looking forward to the sequels.
