Ok so...obviously we're supposed to hate and loathe Ashur. But is anyone else having a hard time watching him control and repeatedly rape Lucretia? It's almost more than I can take at this point. I'm not sure where this show it taking Lucretia's character at this point, or what purpose she even has.

I assume and hope she will kill him soon. YUCK.

On a total side note I noticed tonight that a writer for tonight's episode was Jed Whedon. I googled him and sure enough, he is Joss Whedon's (creator of Buffy) brother! What a small world.

In the moment I find it very hard but not so much because it is Lucretia but because any rape onscreen is very disturbing for me to watch. I'm in no way wishing this upon her but my sympathy meter is much higher for all of the slaves and gladiators she and Batiatus submitted to sexual assaults for their own gratification and to improve their financial and political positions. Poor Diona still haunts me!

That being said, I am hoping to see Asher to finally get his but more for his many betrayals and treachery and in particular, him setting off the chain of events that put Naevia on a far worse path than Lucretia's on right now.

The Fast-Forward button's going to come in handy.

I don't think I've ever wished for a character's demise more than I do Ashur's. He's got to be one of the most hated characters around on today's TV.

Yeah I've had a really hard time watching it in chosen path mostly because it was so damn unnecessary the point of the whole cell scene was to scare Lucretia and make her feel venerable but there are so much better way of doing that other than rape also the next episode the scene in that really turned my stomach. I think the whole things just unnecessary Lucretia has suffered enough she's lost everything she shouldn't be suffering anymore in my view. I'm really hoping that the writers are not going to go down the storyline of Lucretia falling for her rapist because I would loose all respect for them if they did so because it would show just how little they know about the subject in general.

Well, I think Lucretia should suffer a bit, since she and Batty were the cause of so much misery in their house - including Lucretia raping Crixus for as long as she did (don't want to hear it if you disagree, he would never have chose to have sex with her of his own free will and that is rape) and sending his girlfriend away to be sexually and physically abused just because Crixus loved her.

However, she doesn't deserve to be raped (because no one does) and I wish the show wouldn't go there. The fact that there is so much questionable consent sex going on anyway is hard enough to deal with but I hate seeing her reduced to being sexually assaulted by such a parasite as Ashur.

i watched this episode the other day at a friend's house. I was offended. there were many other ways to deal with this and rape is such a personal traumatic experience that it should never been used as a plot device.

All the more reason why I dislike Sparty. Really. I don't care how horrible of a person Lucretia is or what she's done to other people. It's like telling a woman who dresses as a whore she deserved to be rape. It's sick and offensive. Then again, it's Spartacus so I shouldn't be surprised about the content.

I like Spartacus but I don't like what Deknight is doing with Lucretia. Really I think he is gone into dangerous places with this character

Seriously he really said that? I'm shocked and really disappointed by his statement he's clearly loosing it.

Plus does Lucretia raping Crixus justify her being her raped repeatedly by Ashur? Its true some would say its an eye or an eye or that she should get a harsh dose of her own medicine, but I disagree completely I feel this brutal cycle should end. I agree completely with you xwpweb this storyline shouldn't be used a plot device at all.

I'm honestly surprised that there's not more backlash. It probably speaks to the insignificance of Spartacus in mainstream Hollywood. I shared this with a friend who's a rape counselor... her response is unprintable and I'm fairly certain DeKnight will be getting a letter telling him to go stuff it.

I feel the need to step in here as DeKnight is getting killed for something I think has been misinterpreted. I've heard many interviews with him and really would be shocked if he ever said (or felt) something like this. So I checked his Twitter page back to March 2nd, the day before the first incident of rape involving Lucretia and Ashur. I looked at all his tweets with "Lucretia" in them and found only two that reference this aspect of the story:

Fan: Seeing Ashur rape Lucrecia made me kind of sick. DeKnight: It was certainly not meant to be sexy!

Fan: I hate what you've done to Lucretia, it kills me seeing her as a powerless victim of Ashers (sic) cruelty, she needs to fight!!! DeKnight: Exactly the reaction you should have -- despite the fact that Lucretia herself is a murdering rapist.

That is a very far cry from him saying Lucretia "deserves to be raped". Our mileage may vary on this particular plot line but in my opinion, the purpose of it is to illustrate the complete role reversal she finds herself in. She is now in the position that her former slaves were in: a victim to someone who has the ability to control her fate and use her in any way he chooses since as a woman in those times, her status and protection expired along with her husband. It's excruciating to watch just as it was when it was Naevia or Diona but then again, it's supposed to be. This show does not pull punches ever.

I was thinking earlier and now I'm wondering if this isn't some horrible back handed way of making Lucretia more sympathetic to the audience? Because honestly, I didn't have any sympathy for her in the past but now I find myself actually feeling bad for her.

It shocked me that Asher raped Lucrecia. Not because Asher did it, but because it seemed a bit out of character for the two of them or maybe just like it was thrown in there...without being the natural progression of the storyline. I had no doubt though that Lucrecia would get revenge in some twisted way...which is always fun to watch

(Spoiler alert for finale)

I guess now that the finale is over, that Lucretia didn't really care about Ashur, because she knew she wasn't going to be alive much longer anyway. So does this mean she really was insane? Or did she really have nothing left to live for anymore? I don't think I like what they did with her character this season at all. But oh well.

I think Lucretia really was insane...though I personally think this season (other than the main storyline with Sparticus) seemed sloppy. It's as if the storylines were thrown together almost as an afterthought...and I think they took the easy/quick way out with just about everything
