Though this place has incredible meaning to me, I think I understand how things change, especially in the virtual world. So, not saying we should or shouldn't, are we as a community of Xenites getting ready to go from our XOC site to another realm? Let's talk about it.... I only want this to be a conversation so please, let's just talk about it...

Meeting people without all the privacy restrictions and stress, that is related to mainstream sites like Facebook. I'm not leaving this place. This place has to leave me.

I don't know if this phenomena is unique to Xenites, but here's my take on it. Xenites are a close bunch. Those of us on XOC were forum friends first, then many became close friends in RL. For many, the Cons were the start of this. facebook is about RL and transcends the fandom, while keeping it very alive at the same time. Pictures of Xena and Gab pop up on my Newsfeed every day. I'm also in the Amazon Nation group on fb. There are XenaCon pages on fb. We have our local Cincinnati Xenites fb group where we plan our meet-ups. Sure, Xena gets discussed sometimes when we're together. But it's more than that. It's about real friends, not just virtual friends. And I've come to know many Xenites on fb who have never been on XOC. So to me, fb expands the Xenite relationships. But it all started on XOC. XOC has a special place in my heart. I will continue to check in occasionally. Otherwise, you can find me on facebook!

Other sites drawing the community away might have to do with the fact that there has been less activity to check up on. People tend to follow and frequent where there is activity and the crowd. Xena, Gabrielle, and the show hold a special place in my heart, as well as the amazing Xenites that I have met/gotten to know along the way. That being said, there are so many gems and threads on this site that warm my heart and make me fall over laughing. Despite a bit of a lull, as long as it stays available I will visit and contribute in whatever way I can so that newbies and oldies can view the abundance of data and experience joy that comes from it. No, I do not want XOC to cease existing. Facebook has its limitations, for one thing. I find XOC to be the most aesthetically pleasing message board of them all. As well, I've been very involved in the movie campaign, but have made sure to contribute on these boards as well, and try to be helpful to other fans whenever possible.

Two Star General Posts: 2415 10/01/11 9:05 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I know quite a few of us migrated to Skype not to long ago, and have neglected the poor forum. That's kind of the fault of Sara and I and our magical drinking adventures (which more people should join in, by the way). I don't think we should permanently migrate away from this site though. The magic of forums is that they are public. It's where you meet new people. How many people have you just met through Facebook or Skype? Not many, really. I know the Facebook groups are changing this sort of, but it's just not the same as a forum. And forums add a level of anonymity which makes you feel a lot safer to express your opinions than without it. And, honestly, if it wasn't for this forum, I wouldn't have any friends on Facebook that are Xena fans. Before this forum, I tended to be a lot more careful about my anonymity than I am now. Webcamming with people I've never met whilst drinking? A few months ago I would have never thought I'd do that. I've digressed a little, I think. In short, every piece of social media has its place and purpose. The forum serves its, and there is no reason to abandon it. Think of all of the online friends (that could become friends in real life) that you'd never meet if you ignored this magical place. Gabrielle guide us. Gabrielle teach us. Gabrielle protect us. Royal Posts: 7466 10/01/11 10:26 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Although I'm addicted to the internet, I think I'm pretty old fashioned about it :/ I love forums, e-mails, PMs and I like chats. I can see the point in asking this question. I wonder what would the alternatives be? Facebook, twitter etc.? How would it work on there? (I have no account on these so called social networks so I really don't know :/ ) And Raeden, I see the skype group as an addition to this board. Maybe just like many of you are facebook friends now etc. etc. but that's the second step, the basis is the XOC, the thing I like best about boards is the fact that it's not too fast moving which gives you time to think about what others wrote and what you're going to write. Just considering the different timezones, it's so much easier to have discussions going on on forums. But I am maybe really not up to date, that's why I'd really like to know, if boards are not very appealing to people what is it that makes facebook groups and stuff "better"?

To me the nice thing about facebook is people can post whatever they want. It doesn't have to be in a certain "thread" or "subforum". No one has to search out "new posts". Someone could post about a problem they have, their kids, something funny, or just their plans for the day, whatever. All this enables you to know people more personally. If you enjoy anonymity facebook wouldn't be for you. I'm careful about who I "friend" though. The other great thing about facebook is reconnecting with people from your past that you've lost touch with. My 7th grade boyfriend found and "friended" me. I found an ex gf I had lost touch with because she moved away. Now we can talk on the phone again as well as on fb. If you wonder what happened to members of XOC, you can find most of them on fb. Also, most Xenites on facebook are friends with Steven Sears, Hudson Leik, Renee O'Connor, and some with Victoria Pratt, Katerine Fugate, Jenn Sky etc...Steven Sears is especially amusing, and gets some great comments on his posts.

Like, I know that there was a discussion about e-books somewhere on this board and I'm now going to look for it because I have something (important ) to add. How does that work at a platform like facebook? Can you have durable discussion? Without having to recall the already said to people? If I post in a thread that didn't get touched for two months, everyone can quickly read the last posts to see what was already said etc. etc., do you get my point?

If someone posts about an e-book they are reading and you "like" it or comment on it, you will be notified every time anyone else comments on it, or "likes" your post, even if they comment on it months later. By notified, I just mean a little list of notifications pops up when you log onto fb. You click on one, and you're right back to that post.

So could you see this board getting transferred to a social network (let's stick with facebook) or is it more an expanding? Keeping the XOC as the home basis and facebook etc. like little satellite nations? I can't imagine communities like this growing somewhere else than on a board...

While I think it's great to be involved and more social with people, that can happen here just as much as it can happen on facebook. Here, it also encourages talk of the show we all love as well as the friendships we have made, and anything else that comes up. It is an open place to chat and discuss. Its primary focus is Xena; there are new fans coming in all the time. If you want to be really personal and don't want everyone to see what you're saying, then Facebook is a great place for that. But it can never be a replacement for XOC, or forums in general. It's a very different type of discussion. You can't have long chats about one topic there because you must search through pages and pages. To me, it's not as user friendly, not as interactive. (the same goes for LiveJournal) It's mainly for keeping in touch with people and getting to know them specifically. It's also main focus is interacting with other people, not about having real discussions. XOC will always be here and will always cater to those people who choose to discuss in a forum-type environment. I think it's the best way of communicating across the internet. And there's nothing that says someone can't have both (Facebook and this forum). They mean different things to different people, and I am very happy and proud to be a part of this community as it is. Two Star General Posts: 2791 10/01/11 3:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well considering my facebook account is under the dust by now.I think I've used it last around 4 months ago,and I also believe I've accessed it like 5 times in one year so I'm not there...much. For me the board system is much more convenient,I can join in a discussion by posting a reply whenever I have any time free,like 1 free hour or something like that also I feel much more safe here cause you know here you are surrounded by fellow fans which have a lot of posts under their belt so you know someone is here for liking Xena and not stalking etc....I'm not saying there aren't fans on social networks too but here you are more safe or at least I feel more safe. And it is more anonymous but the biggest plus for me it's the slow peace at which a discussion develops and the broad time interval in which you can join.Not sure if board is better than social network I think it's comparing yellow apples with red ones,both good but there are differences not many but there are.And some people find one more convenient ,others the other ,others both,you know. It's really not for conversation that involves anything more than comments of one, two or three lines. As others here have said, a lot of people like having a forum where you can see what the topics are and add your thoughts. I would say that for most people, places like Facebook and other social networks are a supplement to forums, not a substitute for them. I'm far more active on LiveJournal than I am on FB but it still doesn't replace forums for me in the sense of creating a community, a public conversation. So I really don't see one replacing the other. Sure, some people may primarily shift their activity to Facebook (or LiveJournal) while others may not like those media at all, and others may use both. Just because some individuals move doesn't mean that "we as a community" should move. People in online communities come and go all the time. Some move to other fandoms, others to other online media, still others may take a break from fandom and from the Internet altogether. A lot of the time people come back (I've seen people return to XOC who haven't been around here in ages). Posting may slow down at times and then pick up again. Such is the nature of forums. Frankly, I'm a bit taken aback that some people's individual preference for Facebook suddenly turns into a general call to "move on" from here to Facebook as a group. I really don't want to jump down anybody's throat, but it seems to me that posting in a community for the purpose of (the way I'm reading it) talking about how much better some other online venue is and suggesting "moving on" from the site where you are posting is rather poor netiquette. That would seem very sad to me. Me personally, I'm not posting much currently, as I have other stuff going on, other....obsessions...etc, as well as being very antisocal. But I'll always come back. Facebook is faster paced for the most part, though there are times when everyone's on XOC the same can happen here. There are similarities. Facebook you can wite a small comment, or "notes" which are like essays. Pretty much like on XOC. XOC is slower paced in general. I can tell you on fb people post links to XOC for threads such as 'The ANTI XENA & GABRIELLE relationship in The Xena Scrolls Forum' so I would say perhaps both can even be good for the other. When I meet a Xenite on fb I ask if they're on XOC and what their username is there. It's really great to put a face and a RL name to the username, and vice versa.

It has evolved in what it is today primary because of $$$. That said, however, Facebook could be used in conjunction with the board. If I'm not mistaken, there are share tools for Twitter, Facebook, etc on posts. One way to re-energize the board would be to use those features to like and share threads via those social media platforms. (I'm such a geek about this... LOL.) I have no problem with discussing online interaction at Facebook (or LiveJournal or Twitter or whatever) and how it compares to forum, or how the two can coexist and even enrich each other. I was just a little concerned about the "Maybe we should all relocate our community activities to Facebook and here's why Facebook is better" drift of some posts, but I have no problem with the conversation as it has developed overall.
