In your profile page, select the photos links. From there, create a new album (call it something--avatars or something). Upload your avatar. When it comes up, select the photo and make it a profile image. Save and go back out and select the profile photos folder. Select the photo and make it the default profile pic. If you did it right, you new profile pic should show up.
