Re: non canon-based slashiness, I can definitely see how that would be, and it probably explains why most of the slashers are in H:tLJ fandom over X:WP. One of the many reasons I love X:WP is that it is primarily focused on women and their relationships -- not even lesbian relationships per se, just relationships that involve women. That doesn't leave a lot of room for male homosexuality, although I think Caesar has the best chance for it, given that his character is focused on relationships with men as well as women. I stand firm in my belief that Caesar and Pompey are totally into each other. The eye-sexing, people! And the sensual grape-eating and the sassiness and the flouncing around in capes while they have at each other with their "swords." I could wax fangirlish about these two for a while. The other big one is Brutus, natch: Brutus is the "chink in Caesar's armor" and before penetrating him with his knife Caesar does say "I love you." This is hardly canon homosexuality, but it does create room for subtext that is compliant with canon, I think.

Ares does seem much more heterosexual on X:WP as opposed to H:tLJ, since his relationships are almost exclusively focused on women (Xena, Gabrielle, Athena) whereas in Herc it's almost all male (Hercules, Zeus, Strife). Even his heterosexual relationships (Callisto, the Golden Hind) are with homosocial relationships in mind. I think X:WP gives him much more credit and depth as a character, but there's a lot more homosexual tension in H:tLJ.
