Because at this point, after so many discussions, I think they just ARE. Whether they're soulmates, whether they're lovers, it doesn't really matter because their love is there and it's quite obvious no matter who's looking. As for the rest, whether they're spending their free time making out or having sex, or if there's just this constant sexual tension between them, or even if there was just nothing going on and they are exactly as we see them on tv, I'd like to give my imagination that freedom to wonder, to explore all the options. Maybe even if they were ask, they probably wouldn't be able to define it as obviously themselves either as you have seen Xena starting to do at the end of "You Are There". I mean, who's ever super clear about these things anyway? They probably just know what they feel, but if you ask them to get into the technicalities... well... Also, for me personally, if I've had a close platonic friendship with someone for more than a few months, sex is basically off the table -- it would feel way too incestuous. Which is partly why I can't quite fathom Xena and Gabrielle being as close as they were from Season 1 and then becoming lovers in Season 3 or 4. But I realize this works differently for different people, so ... once again we're talking about how personal experiences and preferences influence our perceptions of the show. (I know a few couples that did exactly that!) Every time I re-watch the show I am confused and couldn't figure out what actually they are!! The moment they help each other from the Sins of past to end, the every moment is heart touching. Every time I see them on screen I feel who else could be in love with some one so deeply like that… I just don't define their relation ship is just friends, it is more, it is more than our imagination. They stand together for each other in problems, betrayal and death (excluding Fin), In the episode "the debt", I found a new era in their relation, after the great betrayal of Gabrielle, Xena told her that she can't hate her, she was angry on her for a while… that was hearth touching moment when Xena asks Gabrielle to scratch her nose, that was a fine example to know the depth of their relationship!!
