Yes, I'm more of the opinion of the third option you gave but ....no, I'm not sure I'd say I'm of the opinion that Xena could have a "complete" relationship with them both.... I'm just of the opinion that life and relationships are extremely complicated at the best of times and I could see how she could have an unusual relationship with both of them. I don't think I'd apply the term "complete" to that as it doesn't fulfill the concept of absolute faithfulness . . . at least as general society expects from such a relationship. Of course, there are always those that don't fit the rule and Xena, Gabrielle, and Ares didn't follow societal expectations many times over the course of their story. When I say that IMO they often hurt each other with the complicated nature of that triangle, what I was referring to is this idea that sometimes people accept a less than ideal aspect to their most precious relationships because life is complicated and it's the only way to get as close to something that they'd want. I see that as being there in the X/G/A aspect, perhaps on all three sides. I agree that in many ways, G seems unconcerned but like I said, I see that more as having to do with the third option you gave, than the other two. And naturally the meat of this is simply my interpretation of the entire thing since, of course, the show left a lot of room for interpretation. One of its greatest strengths, IMO, is that it allows for such wide interpretation.
