There are just too many references that suggest it. But also I just love the idea of the two of them ''married'' so to speak. I don't know. I'm gay so that may be why I like the idea so much. One of the things I find fascinating about the Xena fandom in particular is the way that everyone's mental picture of the series can be so different. The things that seem blindingly obvious to one person aren't even on another's radar, and vice versa, and so much has to do with the things we're looking for in the stories we love. I remember Steve Sears saying at the London con that "you" could see X&G as lovers and you're right, and "you" could see them as close friends and you're right. I have this theory/dream about close friendship that I've been working on my entire life. So that's what I saw when I first saw Xena and Gabrielle together onscreen: "goodness, this is what I've been looking for all my life, and it's right there, to be seen and appreciated and explored." It wasn't perfect, but the imperfections and intensity just made it more what it was -- I view The Bitter Suite as one of the greatest love stories of all time, because it showed two people who should never have come back together, who had hurt each other in ways that were unforgivable, and yet their desire to be together overcame all that...love truly conquers all. I just don't personally like putting sex in that picture, so I don't. But that's me, not anyone else. He recently repeated it in a chat with Brazilian fans. I actually think that it's a little more complicated than that -- i.e., to hold either the "friends" or "lovers" POV you need to ignore or "explain away" certain things. So, to some extent, for all of us it's a matter of what we choose to focus on and what we choose to explain away. Because, until the very end of the show, there are some "clues" suggesting that they're lovers/a couple, and some suggesting that they aren't. Sometimes within a few lines of each other. For me, the clues suggesting that they aren't strongly outweigh the ones suggesting that they are, until maybe the last four or five episodes of the show. (In particular, Gabrielle's casual reference to Hercules as the father of Xena's baby in Animal Attraction and the whole thing with Antony in Antony & Cleopatra are pretty solid proof to me that they aren't a couple at that point -- if they were, Xena's behavior in A & C would be unbelievably despicable.) In theory, I could see them as lovers after When Fates Collide, but since I have no interest in seeing them as such, I don't. It is only their souls are meant to each other..!! They're good friends or more than good friends but sexually not!! I know this may disappoint homosexual fans but that is true..!! You may ask that they've been kissing each other (Officially or unofficially) since season 2 to till FIN but it was ok with me..!! becuz their feelings were on each other was beyond words and that true feeling was shared with kiss!! I usually do not support gay activates between straights but two girls are kissing on screen is not a bigger problem for me… I would have more bothered if Hercules and Lollus were kissed each other in the FIN * Oops... It's generally based on the experiences and values of the person watching the show, so one can't really say that anything is more "true" than anything else when we're talking about something so ambiguous (and deliberately so). All interpretations posted here are welcome, but I'd appreciate it if you didn't tell the members from whom you specifically invited opinions which interpretation is the "one true interpretation."

Generally I agree with what LadyKate wrote. The only sign for them to be lovers is the kiss in AUF DER SUCHE NACH DEM LEBEN/THE QUEST. I can see no more indications of a love relationship in the series. By the way: I regularly wonder why a friendship has to be called "just" a friendship. I would not estimate friends a being less important than a lover. Friendship is something different, but not less important or less necessary. So if I estimate Xena and Gabrielle as being friends, this does not at all mean, that there is something missing...

When we say "just friends," that doesn't mean "merely friends," as if it's of lesser quality. It means "friends" as opposed to "friends AND lovers." Since people who are lovers are generally also friends, saying that people are friends doesn't really address the issue of whether they're lovers, which is why "just friends" is our standard shorthand. That's how I perceive their relationship if I look at the big picture. I don't think it makes much sense to nitpick clues and try to come to a conclusion based on the counts of affirmative and negative clues. If there is one thing the show was rich with it is the inconsistencies, and I don't see how any of the portrayed relationships could or should be free from that. The "explaining away" comes naturally with the ambiguity and isn't a bad thing at all. As a subtexter I would have liked to see Xena and Gabrielle outed as a couple, but I also appreciate the challenge that some of the negative clues provide. All 'ships are more than the sum of their parts and we must look at the big picture and decide how we feel about that, and not about what character X said in episode Y. I'm not sure if the perception of Xena and Gabrielle's relationship is based on the viewer's experiences and values. I didn't know about the subtext when I started to watch the show and I pesonally have no same-sex experiences whatsoever (and no intention of changing that), but none of that hindered me to come to appreciate Xena and Gabrielle's love story.

Theirs was a love story that there's no doubt about, but what makes it so brilliant to me was that it was also an archetype, or even an abridged version of what we have come to expect of human interpersonal interactions. Their relationship was all relationships there are rolled up into one. They were student/teacher, siblings, opposites, enemies, lovers, mirror images of each other, "brothers" in arms, family, soulmates, friends and every other possible relationship you can think of. They're like a micro-cosmos, an entire human world of emotions in one entity consisting of two individuals. Then obviously me being bent as a summer day is long in the northern hemisphere, I like to emphasise their gayness and lean heavily on the interpretation of them as lovers. It makes my world a little happier to grab onto these complex fictional characters and their just as complex relationship and make it into something I can personally relate to. I might see them as lovers, but if I had to objectively describe their relationship it would have to be "None of the above" and add "...and so much more".
