Which in turn lead to a discussion of how the perfect fanfic should and would look like. Unfortunately neither one of us wanted to write it. Always a downside. So how about you? What would the perfect fanfic look like? What needs to be included? What type of action/ratings? If you could write the synopsis for THE perfect fanfic what would it be? Any specific types of scenes you would like to include? A specific type of relationship? What about supporting characters? What type of emotional turmoil? I usually really like conqueror and slave type stories where gabrielle melts the heart of the destoyer of nations after the occasional knock back of a scared princess. Little bit of smut, not to extensive or graphic. Im really bad at writing loads so yeah.

Both either late teens/early twenties.. so no cops, nurses, writers, mob bosses or any of the other cliche office clerk/corporate tycoon type characters Either they start off as friends, or it's a "purely sexual/no emotional attachment" kinda deal. I don't want declarations of love and u-hauling after a chapter or two. If they go the friends route, it mustn't be some hugely over-analytical progression into coupledom. I don't want some "I think I like you" "I like you too, let's date" .. I want it to be unspoken, scared of losing the friendship and tense with all the jealousy and crazy hot eyeshagging. If they go the "just sex" route, it must stay emotionally void for a long time, again.. I don't want lovey dovey-ness too quickly, one of them must be a huge emotional cripple that the other must persist with for ages to break down the wall. There MUST be a big build up into the relationshippy stuff. I'm talking chapters and chapters of small incidences, just being friends, interactions, jealousies, total "flirting but can't see they're flirting whilst everyone around them rolls their eyes at the obliviousness" moments. Angst is always good, as long as it's not the classic "Omg, mafia guy is after me" type cliches.. Anything that builds the tension, within reason, is fine by me. The setting doesn't really matter so much as long as it's not cliche. The overall storyline [anything other than the relationship aspect] again.. doesn't matter so much as long as it's not the tired, overused usual. IS THAT ASKING FOR SO MUCH?! ;P No, ok.. there are a fair few fics out there [ok, about 10 or so] that I'll keep going back to that I feel fills 90% of my whims, the rest usually has some vulva factor* or another which lowers it's overall rating. *Vulva Factor: You know when you're reading a fic, and it's reaaally good.. but there's just "something" not right/kinda off about it? That's "The vulva factor". Obviously taken from the overusage of the word in "I Found My Heart..." which makes me cringe every damn time. Bring the boys back home.

I did really love that series but OMFG, why that word? WHY dear gods??? it was like a slap in the face or a bucket of ice water thrown over you every time she used it. Which was...well too many times. MY perfect fanfic- well, for me, Uber, most likely. LONG. Slow build up, the two main characters in an impossible situation to ever be a couple and you can't imagine them ever getting together but by the end you're just like OMG just KISS her for gods sake!!! So yep, lots of agnst and a lot of hot sex, please. and NO VULVAS. eta: oh forgot to mention- SHELL...late teens early 20's? Two teens/early 20 yr olds, is just not hot to me. There just has to be someone who's a bit older, probably cause that's what I'm attracted to in RL, so then I can put myself in the younger persons place, which is what I always like to do in fan fic. I have read stories though where the two main characters were both in their 30s, and that can be hot too sometimes, but mostly I really do love there to be one character around the same age as myself, and one older. ETA: Oh I've really no idea what my perfect fan fic would be, I need to think about it. I do know that it has to have a lot of sex though. I guess I'd better just describe both dreams. Contemporary It needs to include family and the many intricate interactions between family members and the introduction of new people into respective families. As for ages I'm not really that concerned, but prefer them both to be adult and have established lives and identities, I'm not far enough removed from puberty to not find it painful. Long, slow build-up with lots of affection. I want the writer to describe in detail how much the two of them care for each other before the characters realise it or it is taken to a physical level. I want there to be emotional turmoil, but at the same time I want there to be no internal strife between the two main characters. I want the feel of them against the world. As for actual storyline I'm drawing a blank, in a contemporary my main wish and want is the affection and the changing interpersonal relations when the twosome becomes a couple. Historical *Living As A Man: Action. I want passion and aggression. I want the two characters thrown together, possibly against their will. I want gunfights, I want hurt/comfort. I want genderbending (the UX character) and norm breaking, I want to be thrown between male and female pronouns. I don't want today reflected in a mirror of the past, I want the writer to make me think about what we've come to expect and the dynamic nature of human behaviour and taboos. It needs a bad guy, a real nasty piece of work that is somehow connected to one of the character's past. I want corruption and dirty, ugly human behaviour. Then I want it sprinkled with love. I want to see one of those fighting scenarios where the tension flows and is turned into passion. I want it rough and kinda crude yet with an emotional frailty shared only between the two main characters. I don't want any swift declarations of undying love, I want it to be a fight against their own hearts. And no rapes. Yeah, that's what I want right now. I do love the historical LAAM stories too- like backwards to Oregon. That would be a challenge to write. Reading these ideal fanfic descriptions or criteria is a bit intimidating as a writer, but I agree with you overall, those are the kinds of stories I like to read as well. I know that I don't like in fanfics and that would be that the last line is "i love you." or that finally in the end they have sex and it closes with the after glow. Maybe I like it the first time a read a fanfic like that, but it's way too common for me. I want an ending that makes it so damn worth it. I like long fics so I spent a long time with them. And if they are that long the writer did too. I hate when it's spoiled by that sort of ending. If it's an uber I dislike when the character description doesn't fit Xena or Gabrielle. I always picture them and to have a different description throws me. I've only read one LAAM story and I absolutely loved it (Passion's Fool by Kim Prietkel). It'd love to read more if anyone has any recommendations. Oh! and angst should be in the plot summary! Lol. Thanks to Aurora Goddess

Well mine would have to be a classic. Ubers don't draw me in as much unfortunatly. Though I did love Backwards to Oregon and Passion's Fool (Both supplied by Ape lol). But for me playing with the actual characters is more fun. Oh and I do so love a First Time. - Someone else would have to be involved, probs with an interest in one of them. Gets the jealousy jucies flowing of which I adore. I would prefer Gabrielle being jealous and not understanding why just yet. Just a lot of glares and snappy comments to Xena - Don't want anything to happen right off, I like the tension build. I want Xena to be confused and yet amused by Gabrelle's jealousy. - In the end, I don't want a declaration of love is the normal sense. I like it when it's not intentional. Forced out. Or rather....I would love it if all of a sudden Gabrielle or Xena snapped and just kissed the other after perhaps a shoutng match. Yeah dreamy look NO GABRIELLE, NO XENA!
