DVD Decrypter - it allows you to rip DVDs into VOB files, but how many files you get depends on how the DVD is set up.

It's a pretty large video file - if you want to open it and make smaller clips, I recommend VirtualDub. You'll want to compress the video clips with a codec, like XViD or DivX.

First it helps if you download a codec pack, preferably a couple just in case one isn't working for you. I use Nimo since the MS Mpeg-4 codecs work with Sony Vegas.

Next, download and install VirtualDubMod. I have 1.5.10.1, but whatever is newest should work. Open the program, then open the VOB file you want to make clips of.

If you want to make a clip without sound, go to Streams, then select Stream List. Double-click on the audio stream (probably the only one in the box) so that it looks like this:



Next, select your video compression by going to Video --> Compression (or Ctrl-P) and selecting your compressor. Here's what mine looks like.



Now we are ready to make a video clip. Yay! Skip to the beginning of the segment that you want to save as an AVI using the keyframe or individual frame button. Use keyframe if you want to go faster, then use the individual frame button to find the exact frame you want. You can also use the slide bar and the fast forward button (the red/green) to speed through the file and find what you want.



Once you've found the place where you want to start the clip, use the start frame button. Then use the other buttons to get to the end of the segment you want to make, and hit the end frame button. Once you've selected your video clip, it should look something like this:



If you want to change it, that's easy. Just re-adjust to the start or end frame you want to select, and hit the corresponding button again. If you want to completely take away the "masking" and start over, just go to Edit --> Unmask Selected Frames.

Then just go to File --> Save As, then type the name of the file and hit Save, and watch your video render. It's usually a good idea to check your first clip to make sure it's how you want it (and that it works with your other editing software) before you go on.

There are other things you can do with it, like add in audio. You'll get the hang of it if you play around with it a bit.
