Due to the turn this discussion has taken, I have a couple of points I need to address on behalf of the XOC mods.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but subtext really is subjective and not everyone agrees on it. Non-subtexters are not inherently naïve, ignorant or deliberately blind. Lucy, Renee, and whoever else worked on the set have opinions about subtext that are just as subjective as ours -- particularly when talking about how they perceive the characters in retrospect rather than how they played them when making the show. Members of the Xena cast and crew have expressed a lot of different opinions on this topic at different times. However, even if they all agreed and were perfectly consistent, they are not deified holders of "ultimate truth." Fiction provides much to interpret and I find it kind of disheartening to think that we would accept the Xenastaff's word as the ultimate, final word on everything.

Of course it's fine to discuss and enjoy quotes from the actors, writers and producers that confirm or agree with our own views. The problem is when people start using those quotes as a club to beat those with a different opinion. So please remember the rules of the XOC: Respect for other members is mandatory. As I said in this SZ thread, the fact that you're in the subtext forum does not mean that you can freely put down or mock non-subtexters and their beliefs. I will add that it's personally upsetting to me, a subtexter, to hear people automatically label many of my friends as unintelligent or willfully ignorant.

As for the discussion of the possible meaning of Renee's quote about discovering her sexuality, I'm afraid it crosses the line into unacceptable speculation about Renee's private life. XOC rules require respect for the actors and staff of X:WP and prohibit baseless speculation about personal matters.

Feel free to continue with your discussions, but please keep these things in mind when you do.
