In my family, we didn't really give a lot of presents. Mom and Dad gave presents to us kids when we were little, but we kids didn't really give presents back to them, or to each other. Now that we've all grown up, we kids have started giving presents back to our parents, but we still don't give presents to each other, nor do we really do much gift exchanging with our grandparents.
In hubby's family, it's different--everyone gives gifts to everyone. Not only did we get presents for my mother- and father-in-law, but also for my brother- and sister-in-law, two grandmothers, and one grandfather (his other grandfather is deceased.) This may be one reason why hubby is much better at thinking up presents to give me than I am to him--he has much more practice.
