In my family, we didn't really give a lot of presents. Mom and Dad gave presents to us kids when we were little, but we kids didn't really give presents back to them, or to each other. Now that we've all grown up, we kids have started giving presents back to our parents, but we still don't give presents to each other, nor do we really do much gift exchanging with our grandparents. In hubby's family, it's different--everyone gives gifts to everyone. Not only did we get presents for my mother- and father-in-law, but also for my brother- and sister-in-law, two grandmothers, and one grandfather (his other grandfather is deceased.) This may be one reason why hubby is much better at thinking up presents to give me than I am to him--he has much more practice. So I'm wondering, how does gift-giving work in your family? And does your family in general give a lot of presents, or only a few? I know it was that way at Cathy's house. This year I think I gave a lot more presents than I received, but that's okay with me, you know? Christmas was really special, and my favorite part of all was singing carols at Mass. I gave presents to my parents and my brother. I've given presents to the rest of my family since I was nine or ten (although I though $10 was enough to Christmas shop for three then), but we're also unusual in that my brother and I never believed in Santa. So there were always just presents from Mom, Dad, and Grandma, never a pile from Santa as well. (That's not to say we didn't get a lot of nice presents! It's just that now I feel a bit bad if my parents give me something better than I gave them, and this year my mom gave me a pile of expensive cds for my birthday.) Let's see: this year I mailed presents to my dad, gave them to my mom and brother and extended family in person at Christmas, mailed them to a few friends and delivered them in person to many more friends. I did a couple of online gifts to livejournal friends.

I send presents to my niece and nephew and we gave something to my MIL but my dad said don't bother and my brother and I don't exchange gifts anymore (my SIL birthday is within weeks of mine and we both received an amazon voucher from each other!). Mr Gabfan23 and I don't exchange gifts either. we buy what we want when we want, so it seemed a little pointless and to be honset kids take up all your time, energy and money! Were now older so now we all get gifts for everyone. Like I have a brother, so I buy gifts for my brother, mother and father. I live in a one-parent family.. and I don't have any brothers or sisters so I don't have to get a lot of gifts. We have a pretty large family on my mother's side but we don't get to see them very often.. It's the family I'm close to. My dad has 2 sisters but we never see them, I have one grandfather left but he spends xmas alone, doesn't want to come celebrate with the family anymore because it's too far, too tiring and since my grandmother died 7 years ago, he doesn't really care anymore... (but frankly it makes me very sad knowing he's alone but he assured me it was ok, he told me to follow my parents at my aunt's to celebrate even if I'd rather celebrate only with my paretns, in my parents' home with my grandfather... but it's been more than 20 years we spend xmas at my aunt's and I'm fed up with this situation... But, as I usually work on xmas days, when there's a year I have the day off, I think about my mother who misses me very much and I join my parents at my aunt's...) (wow, that was pretty long)

But now that my sis and I are grown up (more or less), we just get together for Christmas without exchanging presents. But I gave a rocking snail to my 8 months old goddaughter. She doesn't get the rocking part of it yet, but eventually she will!
