She helped his daughter, but then betrayed Hope and thereby him. She mocked his plans for the world to Hope "Yeah, Yeah, glory Hallelujah. "She blasted his followers who were collecting blood sacrifices (something Ares and Discord wouldn't do as far back the Krahstar ep) and openly helped Xena against him. Yet nothing. He didn't appear to Callisto, threaten or harm her. She even attacked Ares in Dahak's own temple when the war god was defending Hope. Talk about an ally gone bad. So why was Ares so afraid of Dahak when Callisto didn't give Dahak's desires a second thought? Also, do you think that part of the reason Ares was helping Dahak wasn't fear. It was because he hated his family and wanted to reign over them, even if it meant being beneath Dahak. ~~~~~~~~~ I'm the King of Sweetness, my dear. --Hades to Persephone "Not Fade Away."

Cuz Callisto's a lunatic and Ares isn't? Callisto, in her insanity, didn't give two shakes about anything not named Xena. She doesn't care about who the most powerful entity in the universe is. In fact, the only thing she'd have thought about Dahak is whether he was powerful enough to give her oblivion. She didn't respect anything else enough to be afraid of it. Except, perhaps, her Master. Also, do you think that part of the reason Ares was helping Dahak wasn't fear. It was because he hated his family and wanted to reign over them, even if it meant being beneath Dahak I think Ares knelt for Dahak because he saw his power. I don't think he hated his family enough to submit to anything otherwise. The Hercules Ares might have, but the Xena Ares is a different kind of animal. I don't equate the two. And his anguished look at the dead Athena, plus the way he tried to save Dite by himself, doesn't say he hates his family. At least not those members.

Why does Dahak threaten Ares who is merely gathering his armies to battle Dahak, but he says/does nothing to Callisto when she repeatedly (key work, folks) defies him--which includes hurting his followers and sneaking around his temple unnoticed. ~~~~~~~~~ I'm the King of Sweetness, my dear. --Hades to Persephone "Not Fade Away."

Ares needs to be threatened to pledge his allegiance but Callisto's is given as freely as it can be by an insane person. Maybe Dahak appreciates her bloodlust, or her insanity, her love of chaos - maybe she reminds him of himself?

Callisto was capable of anger and obession. She had scattered desires, and she had goals and plans. But I don't think she was emotionally capable of fearing for her own safety. If Dahak had killed her, she would have welcomed it and tried to fight to the death with him. I wonder if Dahak didn't chase her down because of that -- because he sensed that there was nothing he could do that would hurt her? Or perhaps it was more mundane than that; perhaps Dahak simply wanted to use her again and was willing to overlook her defecting to the other side along the way.

He knew when to retreat to fight another day, and he bought himself enough time to make the deal with the Fates and convince Gabrielle to take the fall (literally, it turns out) for him and Xena. That's not cowardice, it's cunning. Maybe it isn't the same as making a stand and fighting to the death for the Greater Good, but the way I see it, the hero position was already filled.

Callisto was an entire universe in herself without regards to anything existing on the outside. Ares didn't work like that, he was used to squabbling and fighting for power and leadership. And it should also be pointed out that among mortals he might be a leader, but he was never top god. Following was probably not a completely foreign concept to him. It is kind of interesting that Dahak can appear to Ares and apparently threaten him with some kind of serious harm, but he's nowhere to be seen when Callisto is shooting fireballs at his followers. I'm assuming that since Dahak hasn't fully entered this world yet, he's operating under some kind of limitations. Again -- not that Callisto would care about anything he could do to her. She`d lost everything including own soul or her self, so she didn`t afraid of anything. Dahak couldn`t do to her anything worst. Ares did realize Dahak is more powerful as his family so he join him partially from the fear and partially from the self-interest. He always sought own interests. And I don`t think Dahak did care to much about simple people.

Callisto was obsessed with Hope because she hoped that Hope would be able to destroy her actual arch nemesis, Xena. Whereas Ares had the olympian seed which could be used to create the destroyer... I don't see Callisto being able to give anyone babies In summary Dahak needed the olympian seed to create the destroyers, he picked Ares probably because he had seen that Ares was disenchanted with his family and also because Ares was known to fold and submit if it meant his own life. He also probably thought that Ares was arrogant enough to believe that it was a partnership thus being more willing to follow Dahak.
