That's a good question.

I think their journey worked a lot like the typical way that I get on the computer in the evenings. I don't usually have a set "journey." I know that I'm going to check my email and my livejournal sites, and hopefully get to school. But things will happen. I'll get a text message from a friend wanting to talk online, or I'll see a long livejournal post that I want to comment on, or I'll have more comments than usual to answer, or I'll find myself intrigued by a Xena discussion and come here instead. I think Xena and Gabrielle started out that way: without a plan in mind, figuring that they would simply journey. They weren't looking to fight. But they kept getting asked to do things. Diana's father sent for Xena's help at one point. Sometimes X & G would come into a village and find a situation there to be solved...but now that I think about it, usually each episode opened either just before or just ever the call for help that Xena would answer. The Deliverer opened up right before Xena rescued Khrafstar. Past Imperfect opened right after Xena getting a call to warn a village about an approaching army, and the opening conflict was whether or not Gabrielle would go.

I think by FIN they'd run out of such sommonses (that, and after the 25 year ice freeze no one thought to ask for their help anymore), so Gabrielle was wondering what specific destinations they'd choose. Xena's idea just to go somewhere else -- that was both hopeful and sad for me, sad because Xena had so little direction to show for so much work, hopeful because it meant that maybe Xena's practical work in Greece was done at last.
