I've been discussing breakups quite a bit on my livejournal. One of the comments I received was that, in the more intense forms of dating, you lay yourself completely bare before the other person. Having your whole self rejected is a wound that take a lot of time to heal. So if it was that kind of breakup for your friend, then I'd agree with everyone else: just don't do it.

One more thing to keep in mind: if you trust your friend's judgment, there's probably a reason your friend broke up with her ex, you know? Like LadyKate said, maybe the ex just isn't a good person to date and your friend knows why.

I actually think the number one rule of friendship is to keep the other person's trust. To never betray a confidence (or if you do it accidentally, to fess up and make reparations as soon as possible), to be loyal, to keep all the promises you make. That kind of relationship is worth fighting to preserve. If your friend isn't close to the ex, or if she broke up because she had stronger reasons of friendship and romance, or if it was just casual dating, like LK described, then it's probably safe to do it. But definitely talk to your friend first.
