I rated Caesar a 10. He was one of my favorite characters. He was evil and clever and fun to watch. I enjoyed all of Caesar's screen time.

I gave him a 1. I didnt find him hot, (blech!) and I hated the way he hurt Xena...it makes me just...grrrrr! I like Karl but he was too many different
characters in Xena, and he was way too young and unconvincing as Ceasar. I also didn't think it felt realistic how naieve Xena was with him. Juat
didn't buy it.

He's an ass, yet somehow I can't bring myself to hate him. That must be a sign of charisma. . . or just good acting. . .

10.
Although I don't like (nearly) all the charasterictics of Caesar. But I just love how the role is made - the acting's great! His self-infatuation and sarcastic nature just make me smirk all the time. He's a great challenge to Xena and makes many episodes very interesting. Maria

Rats! I was going to go off line when I saw this and had to present my dissenting view.
1. Caesar is third on my list of worst characters, behind Varia and Michael the so-called archangel. This despite Karl Urban's performance, which in fact is very good. (Elsewhere I have him second, but I had forgotten about Michael.) The main trouble is, the XWP Caesar does not square in any respect with the historical Caesar, a fellow I have been more or less familiar with since I was a sophomore in high school translating his On the Gallic War. He is one of the major reasons I regard Destiny as the worst episode in the series. I will give one example. In The Deliverer (the second worst episode) and When in Rome, Caesar had Gabrielle in his power. One of the historical Caesar's particular traits was to seduce the wives of his political enemies (though he did not do this to Pompey even when the latter was not married to Caesar's daughter). Given the special relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, it would definitely have been in character for Caesar to at least attempt to seduce Gabrielle. Definitely read Suetonius (The Twelve Caesars), who actually touches on many of Caesar's good points even though the bad ones win out, to understand more. Caesar represents the most blatant YAXI of all: XWP makes him contemporary with the Trojan War, which ended nearly 1200 years before he was born! There is much, much more, but I will save it for when I post that Worst Characters list. Best Caesar scene: when he returns the knife to Pompey. (When in Rome) Worst Caesar scene: when he burns Gabrielle's peace proposal. (Endgame) Best Caesar line: can't think of any off hand, but he did have some good ones. Worst Caesar line: "Caesar. Julius Caesar." I know this was spoofing James Bond movies here, but it didn't fit. ("Julius Caesar" is in fact his family name. He did prefer to be called simply "Caesar", but could be formally addressed in Roman fashion as "Gaius Julius," Gaius being his given name.) Biggest missed opportunity: The gens Julia, which included the Julii Caesares, claimed descent from Aphrodite via Aeneas, the family taking its name from Iulus, son of Aeneas. This was not disputed in Caesar's day. Aphrodite and Caesar never appear together in the same episode. Caesar was in his late 50s when he died, and balding (he was so embarrassed by this he would comb his hair over to cover it, and was particularly grateful when the Senate voted him the privilege of wearing a laurel wreath in public at all times). Pompey was six years older than he was. Brutus was much younger than either. "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now." -- Crosby, Stills and Nash, Suite:Judy Blue Eyes |

It's always hard for me to post in the "rate a villain" threads, because I'm so far into the story that I don't see a character (love,
hate, or love to hate), I see a dangerous opponent who did a lot of horrible things. "Boyfriend from hell,"
The character would probably earn a high rating, since my opinion of Caesar is very low. He was...he had this kind of arrogance that let him claim that an entire country was himself, and he betrayed without any hint that he ever thought that he had done the wrong thing. I think that getting Caesar out of a place where he could hurt others turned out to be one of Xena's major life tasks. So I guess that outside of the story I'd give him a high rating? Inside the story I'm just glad he's dead.

I liked Caesar. I believe he was one of those characters that remained the same throughout. As Xena said he is scum and will always be.

Gave him an 8. A fascinating character who could have been better developed, IMO.
He was great in Destiny -- to quote JSolo1: He was an arrogant, narcissistic, shrewd and clever SOB. His confidence about his destiny, his swagger, I was diggin' all that. Caesar was the business and without question the way Karl Urban played him brought a huge add to the show. Yep! Sometimes, I've wondered if Caesar should have been a more complex character -- someone who had human ties he cared about, rather than "friends" he sought only to use for his own purposes. (The historic Caesar, for instance, actually wept when Pompey's severed head was delivered to him, in spite of their political rivalry.) Then again, I'm not sure that was needed -- total narcissistic egotists really do exist, and I think Caesar worked really well as such a character. My favorite Caesar episode is Destiny, with When in Rome... a close second. (Actually The Deliverer is second overall, but for the Caesar content I'd rank WIR higher.) The worst: Definitely When Fates Collide. The alternate-world premise was actually fascinating, but I think the episode did a serious disservice to the character of Caesar. It adds stupidity to his other qualities, and that just doesn't seem right as part of the package. I mean, Caesar is married to Xena and he cheats with Alti? Favorite scenes: Every scene in Destiny, really. Especially his first appearance, the seduction scene, and his capture of Xena. The Deliverer -- the face-off against Xena. When in Rome -- scene in the dungeon with Xena; conversation with Crassus; giving Pompey the dagger back; the moment where he realizes that it's Crassus and not Vercinix on the chopping block A Good Day -- meeting with Xena and Pompey in the woods Endgame -- "Pompey's changed his haircut" Ides of March -- conversation with Brutus Least favorite: When Fates Collide, where he has Alti kill Lao Ma's ambassadors, where he kills Brutus, and the sex/murder scene with Alti. Best Caesar lines: Destiny: the monologue about destiny; "Some enemies are harder than others" When in Rome: "Look at you -- captured and chained by a woman I captured and chained"; "This is Xena -- an old friend -- enemy -- friend -- I forget where we left off"; "And somewhere out there is an irritating blonde following a plan that no longer exists" Endgame: "Pompey's changed his haircut. Too bad." Ides of March, to the assassin who brings him the "head of Xena": "And take 'Xena' with you." When Fates Collide, to Xena's "I must have been your worst nightmare": "Well, yeah, I've had better experiences with women."

7. I like his character but there wasn't much depth there. I almost knew what to expect from him which made watching the episodes he was in all that more
predictable. And theres only so many times I can take that rigid, serious look on his face...

I gave the poor bugger a 10.
I absolutely loved Caesar in XWP, I think Karl Urban did an amazing job portraying him. He was just one of those characters (as stated before) that you loved to hate and hated to love. The air about him just seemed to scream arrogance and self service, but really what would you expect? The man thought he was going to rule the world and would stop at nothing to achieve what he wanted. The intensity of this character was played perfectly from scene one. The reason I like him so much is for his impact on the series. Caesar was the one who literally broke Xena, he was the one to send her on her rampage... In all honesty, thats quite the feat in and of itself. Hmm I think he was really good in When Fates Collide, but that is just my opinion. Thats where my favorite line comes from: JC: "Please, don't misunderstand me. It's not that I love you any less but that I love Rome more... And I AM Rome"

Hmm Ceaser --- I voted 3
I just dont really like the whole Rome arch really. Well i do like it, but its definatly not one of my most watched ones. He is a pretty interesting character but he never really got to me in the same way some of the others did. I prefered how Brutus was writen to be honest. I mean the Ruthless wanna be ruller of the world who has a weekness for Xena, sort of been done hasnt it? I did however like Xena's bitterness towards him, and how he betrayed Xena at the begining. I think I prefered the backstory to the present parts of the episodes.

9 - He was an excellent foil for Xena, smart and careful, yet with the fatal flaw of being too sure of himself and his Destiny(TM).

I had to give JC a 6. He wasn't bad, but I couldn't get into him like I could a lot of other villains. To me, he lacked the humanity that all great
villains have. He's very I rule the world me, me, me. However, I must admit, karl does do a great job playing him. I think I just wanted more, maybe for
him to learn from his mistakes, have a little despair. In this, I have to agree with Girlwithachakrum, Brutus is a much more interesting character. There's
conflict and humanity and recognition. JC is a machine, great as a foil for Xena, wonderful plot device, and good back story, amazing charisma (which a really
just attribute to karl) just no humanity, no regret. Callisto had internal conflict as does Ares, two of my fav villains in Xenaverse, and JC just didn't
have that extra dimension. Also, this might have something to do with the fact that I loved Karl as cupid so much more. Him blonde was HOT.
Favorite scenes: I have two really, one where he is speaking with the fates and reweaving destiny. He was just really cool in that scene, utterly in control. Least Favorite Scenes: Most of his interactions with Callisto in Ides, he feels so much like a pawn in that one vs. the uber villain I got used to. Of course, I loved Callisto so it might just be she was overshadowing him there. |

7, he was an interesting character to follow throughout the series. Though Destiny, IOM & WFC are the only Rome episodes I'm that crazy about.
