I still hope it happens, though. But, it might be that they make a movie, casting someone else as Xena. How would you feel about that? I've been wondering a lot about it. I would proberbly watch the movie, and feel disapointed. Lucy Lawless IS xena, and I can't imagine anyone else playing her. I don't think I would by the act. Vote Xena for president! This would be a dis to the legend of Xena. Kind of like finding out that the woman playing Velasca was orginally going to play Xena - took my breath away. No one is Xena but Lucy and no one is Gabrielle but Renee. End of discussion.

Don't get me wrong -- I adore Lucy. I agree that she was Xena, she really lived the part and didn't just act it. And Renee was Gabrielle. That said, the show is over. It has been over for 7 years. And I'm not so sure that after all this time, Lucy and Renee could just get inside the skin of Xena and Gabrielle again and recapture the magic. Because that's what the show had, magic. You know what they say: You can't step into the same river twice. It would be jarring to see another actor as Xena, yes. But at the same time, personally, it would make me feel that Xena, the character, had truly reached the status of an icon or a legend in our culture. Think of how many actors have played Superman or Batman or Catwoman, for instance. (Or, to take it to the level of more classical culture, how many actors have played Sherlock Holmes or Hamlet.) And I'd rather see other actors as Xena and Gabrielle than see Lucy and Renee doing a professional job but without the magic. IF the person they chose did a good job. I'd want to see what someone else could do with the part and how I could see Xena in this person without it being Lucy. It would be an interesting challenge. I've said it before, but I find the idea of a recast and a retelling of the show's main themes in a movie very appealing. Not a continuation of the series, but a movie that stands on it's own and tells the story in a way that fits a movie, bringing in the themes and characters we love and basically giving a huge nod to the success of Xena for six years. That would be cool. I would be delighted to see that the show had reached that level of appreciation, of presence in the collective consciousness of people in that it could be played over and over again by actresses like, as you said, Cat Woman, Batman, Superman etc have. That would be just amazing, and while I can't say if it has or not, being a tad myopic and a serious fan and so really biased, I'm not sure that the charactes and show have reached that level. I'd be inclined to give an enthusiastic Yes!! But who can say? I suppose you wouldn't be able to tell unless and until a movie did hit the screen, and we all could see if it flew. Can you imagine a dark and gritty Xena movie along the lines of the new Batman movies? Crap, the newly correographed fight scenes would be obscene!!! Ahem...sorry, got a little over enthusiastic there. Interesting. All this being said, I'd still be uncomfortable seeing the characters being played by anyone but Lucy and Renee. I would looooove to see Xena live on in one form or another, but if they're not going to do it right, I'd rather them not do it...with or without Lucy and Renee.

(please don't kill me!). I can't imagine anyone else other than Lucy as I sit here right now, but then again there have been a lot of shows out there such as Battlestar where Starbuck HAD to be a guy, but I was completely sold on Starbuck being a girl because she is so awesome at the role. I think as long as the person didn't try to be Lucy, I would have an easier, more believable, time of it.

NO! NO! To me and I think a lot of people Lucy IS the only Xena. But if ten years down the line they decide to make a Xena movie i can't say I'll feel the same. So I'd say Lucy should play Xena until she is unable to then I'm unsure how I'll see things. IF it was made in the next 5 years or so, then I'd be very annoyed if LL wasn't cast as "Xena". If the movie isn't made for another 5+ years, then I could see LL being really reluctant to go through all that rigorous physical exercise again and I'd be willing to watch someone else in the role (although I would hope it was someone with talent and not just someone with big breasts, a black haired wig and blue contacts). I would most likely be watching it and forget that it was supposed to be Xena at all and look at it as a completely new character that resembles Xena.....or i would end up hating the movie because i would be comparing the actress playing xena to Lucy the whole time, and thinking in my head "xena would NEVER do that" :LOL

Anyways, to sum up my opinion: 1. For me, Lucy IS Xena and Renee IS Gabrielle. 2. If the movie was cast without them, I would be very prejudiced and think the new actors CANNOT fit the roles. 3. However, I WOULD go and watch it, just to give my support - I wouldn't want a Xena movie to be a flop that no one goes to watch. 4. While watching, I'd be very critical, with the already mentioned "this-character-is-not-like-that" attitude. 5. If the movie made enough justice to the TV series, I'd be happy if it was successful. 6. Still, I'd prefer a well-made movie with Lucy and Renee. 7. But IF the movie was a flop, I'd prefer it without Lucy and Renee - I could always use the explanation that it just didn't work without the original cast. 8. Whether or not a recast movie would be successful, I would watch the TV series with the original cast feeling nostalgic. The original series is the Xena thing for me. I think that would be a great way a movie could appeal to an audience who doesn't know about Xena as well as appealing to people who do know about it. That's why I think a movie could be detatched from the series and specific storylines, and new actors could be a part of that. Of course, I'd love to see Lucy and Renee in the roles again. Especially now. I think it would be cool to see how they get back into the characters after so many years, how they look as those characters now. But I'm not opposed to a recast. I never watched the original series before I saw the movie (I guess I was too young to be interested at the time it was on TV). When the movie came out, I went to watch it and I loved it. I was wondering why so many TV series lovers didn't like the movie. Why did they have to be so picky? When they said "this and this thing was not included in the movie" I thought that hey - of course a movie has to be more compact, you can't fit everything in two hours! When they said "the new actor for this and this role was so not them!" I thought that they were just fine - why do people have to complain if something is made in a new, different way! Of course things have to be revised, who would want a copy of the original? If they want everything done in the same way, why don't they just watch the original and be happy? But when I think of Xena, that is exaclty what I would want - a perfect copy. A new, modernized up-to-date version of Xena sounds just somehow artificial. Although the 90's graphic effects make me smile sometimes, they're a part of the show. And if Xena's character was any different, she wouldn't be Xena for me. I guess I'm just as picky as those Pride and Prejudice series lovers that are not too thrilled about the movie. Maria Thanks Taladarkie JJ for the keeper. And everyone who made the userbars. :)
