One of my favorite moments of vulnerable Ares, especially when he delivers the first and last line here: Ares: "I see your face everywhere." Xena: "Stop it! You stop it! You're so desperate-- you're trying to convince me that you love me. Well, go on. Say it. Say it. Say you love me. The time for you and me has been and gone." Ares: "It was worth a shot anyway. I thought in your present condition you might be a little more gullible." Xena: "I am pregnant, not brain-damaged." Ares: "I love you, Xena." & xena + ares + gabrielle + old farm = OT3 lulz & ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- something to talk about

It's still adversarial, but it's like Ares knows that he's not a threat to Xena, and he's trying to tell her he's on her side, but he can't make it sound sincere, even though he actually means it. One of my favourite season 5 epiosode. I love the scene in Tartarus where ares is trying to say to Xena that he loved her and then he tells her that when she runs away. Also I like the fact that Ares goes against Zeus to protect Xena and her child knowing that the child is dangerous even for him.

It's a little like their exchange in The Deliverer, when Ares tries to tell her about the danger of leaving Dahak's temple to stand. And also like the farewell scene in SAC, when Ares comes to tell Xena about the Destroyers. Defensiveness gets to be a habit, and Ares just doesn't have a clue how to go about convincing Xena of something without it sounding like another "plan". The farewell in SAC is where he comes closest to trying to be as straightforward as he can -- but of course then Gabrielle turns up and he's back to trying to be all flippant. (1) I love how vulnerable Ares looks in the Tartarus scene. My favorite moments: (2) Great point about the defensiveness, Tango. It plays out in a fascinating way in the GFC scene: Xena accuses Ares of trying to use "I'm in love with you" as a ruse to manipulate her for some sort of strategic purpose (getting on her good side now that the Twilight's coming?), doesn't trust a word he says -- and since Ares has just made himself vulnerable only to have her lash out at him, he puts up his defenses by confirming her accusation and pretending that he really was trying to manipulate her. Basically, a vicious cycle of mistrust and defensiveness. But so much fun to watch. (3) I know some shippers are very frustrated by Ares' inability to get out those three little words until Xena is out of range -- but what do you think would have happened if he had managed to say "I love you"? I think Xena would have been even more pissed off -- her reaction probably would have been "You have no shame at all, do you?" (4) Let's not forget the shipperiness of the earlier scene between Ares and Zeus -- that's really where Ares effectively admits for the first time that he loves Xena. Not only "You intend to murder a woman I'm rather fond of," but also "... And Xena has earned mine" (love, that is). The other side of the coin, though, is that Ares essentially agrees to Zeus' deal -- Zeus gives him the green light to kill Hercules, Ares doesn't interfere with Zeus' plan to kill Xena. Does that bother anyone? Did Ares think Zeus would actually kill Xena? One Star General Posts: 1856 (11/10/08 6:38 PM) Gabrielle's Apprentice Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Well, as a Herc/Xena shipper and a Xena/Ares shipper, this was a NICE NICE NICE episode for me, but I only wanna talk about the Xena/Ares aspect, because Hercules...well, let's just say I have a 'tude about him right now. LOL. My favorite moment was captured in the above post. Xena and Ares in Tartarus. The fact that Ares admits aloud that he loves Xena after she's out of earshot is just really a pivotal moment for me as a shipper. The fact that he actually says it aloud kind of paved the way for him actually saying it to her face. Before we knew who "fathered" Eve, I always hoped it was Ares and that, as Gabrielle suggested, he did a "god thing." Of course, it would have been much better if it would have been a consensual thing, with Xena knowing, LOL.

She's just as scared as he is, in her own way -- because semi-subconsciously, she knows there have been feelings between them that were not animosity or shared history or whatever, and ... she likes them. She doesn't want to give them up. If Ares insists on dragging them out to the daylight, then she would have to face these feelings and give them up. And she doesn't want to do that. (And of course, there is the even worse scenario where Ares uses these feelings as part of a scheme, which would, in Xena's eyes, cross boundaries that should never be crossed). Good to see you involved in shipper discussions. I love Ares saying "I love you" when Xena's out of earshot. But does he ever really say it to her face? Well, he does, sort of, in Motherhood -- but there's always the question of whether he's completely sincere at that point, since he's distracting her so that Gabrielle can stab Eve. But that's for a future discussion. Tango, that's such a great insight -- that one reason Xena gets so agitated is that on some level, she knows the feelings are real.
