Now I know Halloween has been vastly commercialized and expanded from its original roots. I also know that the whole decorating/trick-or-treating/big party part is probably mostly an American thing. I was originally just going to ask about your costumes (if you are going to wear any) but I am also interested to learn about how everyone celebrates the holiday, if at all. So now I'm going to start two threads, one on each topic. I was going to try to lope all of the options in one poll/thread, but I think that would be too difficult and complicated. So here we go! Do You Celebrate Halloween and If So How? And like all my explanations, kind of long... As a kid, up to age 10, I'd dress up and would be taken to a couple of neighbors houses and then to both sets of grandparents. We lived out in the country and several miles away from either families, and they lived in opposite directions from each other. There weren't many stops, but it'd take most of the night. LOL. Costumes were by far the best part, because there really wasn't much of a candy haul. When I was 11, my sister had watched a couple kids who lived in town around my age (bit younger, but close) over the summer and I'd sometimes go over with her or she'd bring them to our place, and we got along well. So that Halloween I went trick or treating with them in their neighborhood. Holy cow! It was awesome! All sorts of candy and it was just cool to do the 'normal' stuff, rather than having to be driven miles just for one stop. After that year, my parents split up, we moved and Mom started to study as a Jehovah's Witness, and while she didn't push me into it really, I jumped in with both feet. Honestly, think I used it as a bit of a shield from people... Anyway, after that, didn't celebrate it anymore. Usually it's celebrated in Europe on Nov. 1 but here the day falls on the Saturday between Oct. 31 and Nov. 6. The traditions go back to the 8th and 9th century in European countries but as far as celebrations go, my family visits the grave-sites of our loved ones and light a candle, and then stroll around the cemeteries looking at all the pretty lights. It's a family day. Then of course I round it off with scary movies and shows..

I guess it is essentially, or more akin to, All Saints Day. As for Halloween, I live in an apartment building full of young professionals and/or retirees. Kids are seldom seen in these parts so it is entirely possible for me to ignore the holiday. At work our office does a thing for children with kids coming in dressed in costumes and visiting employees handing out candy. I don't usually participate but I do observe it with interest as some of the kids are adorable (but they do not need more candy!) I am going to a party and costumes are encouraged but not required. Several friends and I will not be dressing-up so I guess that makes us party-poopers. One friend, however, has mentioned that she will go as far as bringing a six-pack and wearing a name-tag that says "Joe." I really have no Halloween spirit. Courtesy of TaladarkieJJ

One year i went trick or treating around my neighbourhood but here in Adelaide we dont get into it as much, not very many people do, which is a shame! I personally love Halloween so this year although I wont be trick or treating, im planning to watch scary movies and eat candy apples and what not "this is not your standard god obsession, ok... i'm havin urges that i'm not real proud of." -- Ares

My mum really wants me to go, so I do. We have candy to give out, but trick or treating isn't big in my neighborhood. Last year we had two little punks run up and that was it. And I have kids who live NEXT DOOR. Whyyyyy don't they come? They play with my decorations, and they are cute....I'm puzzled. I dunno. I've had enough! Made up my mind, I'm gonna get up, and out and wahhh! Gonna step right up. Spit shine my soul, I'm gonna be proud and loud and outta control! I'm lookin in the mirror and I like what I see, I've lost the fear & the horror that's been eatin' at me I love myself today, not like yesterday, I'm cool, I'm calm, I'm gonna be okay!

It's a really nice atmosphere. Especially after dark.
