The character is randomly selected by picking cards out of a box. And our pick of the day is ... The ratings are on a scale of 1 (worst/most disliked) to 10 (best/most liked). Just to clarify, you don't have to "like" the character as a person in order to give them a high rating -- it can be a character who is a bad person but interesting, well-written, well-acted, etc. So, on that scale, how would you rate Brutus as a character? Why do you like or dislike him? What do you most like/dislike about him? What episode(s) was he best/worst in? What are your favorite and least favorite Brutus lines or scenes? In Endgame and IOM he was interesting and and it looked promising (although I never quite understood why he killed Ephiny and Pompey ended up the baddie) only to be killed in A&C. Would have given him more if he'd bothered to save Xena and Gabrielle at the same time. I thought, depending on the episode, his character went from good to bad and back again, (or maybe the other way round), so I don't like the inconsistencies.

You can't have Caesar withour Brutus, although I do wish Caesar had managed to keep just "one" Brutus around. I quite liked the way that Brutus (as played by David Franklin) managed to develop in his few appearances. Brutus' development kind of paralleled Gabrielle's own development from naivety to a more mature outlook on life (although Gabrielle didn't develop quite the insatiable lust for power that Brutus did). I would have liked to have seen more of Brutus (if they'd managed to keep the same actor, preferably David Franklin, although that would have require re-writing the casting from the very beginning) and more of a structured character development from his appearance in Destiny right through to his death in A&C. All in all, I really enjoyed Brutus as played by David Franklin (no offence intended to the other Brutusses (or is that Brutii)) as he managed to take what little character development afforded to the character and do some decent work with it. And there was a cool little "cycle" with Gabrielle freeing Brutus in Endgame to Brutus killing Caesar in part because Caesar arranged for Gabrielle's death and then the final Brutus vs. Gabrielle showdown where Gabrielle managed to exact vengeance for Ephiny. I pretty much ignored the first one because he didn't leave any impression on me. I liked how Brutus brought a kind of humanity to the end of season 4, even though it ended up badly for x/g.

I do wish the David Franklin version of Brutus had been introduced sooner -- he'd have been good to have around in When in Rome. He was an interesting mix of craftiness, honor, intelligence, and (for a while) blind loyalty to Caesar. Like Haeph, I find the cycle of his development in Endgame -- Ides of March -- Antony & Cleopatra quite interesting. There's one interesting twist to it, though -- in a sense, Xena is the "corruptor" of Brutus. When she destroys his loyalty to Caesar and instigates his murder of the man whom he long considered a dear friend -- all for the Greater Good -- she inadvertently smashes his moral compass, and turns him into someone who will not balk at murder. That was an interesting development. Kind of wish his relationship with Gabrielle had been developed more, not necessarily in a romantic direction. I thought he was pretty direct with Xena and Gabrielle (at least until Antony & Cleopatra). I think he meant to do right by them in Endgame -- he was clearly shocked when Caesar burned the treaty with the Amazons. My impression was that he continued to delude himself about Caesar's true nature and was blinded by him to some extent, but in Ides of March he seemed clearly uncomfortable with what he was doing. (Besides, we're not rating characters on how good a person they are, otherwise Callisto would not have gotten all those 10s! ) Anyway, just wanted to mention one of my favorite Brutus moments -- in Endgame when Amarice taunts him about Amazon executions and Brutus deftly puts her in her place: Amarice: "Hey, Roman -- have you ever witnessed an Amazon execution before? I don't know how they do it here -- but in my tribe, it took a long, long time. And as the life oozed out of you -- we'd talk with you -- ask you how it felt." Bru: "You're such a child. I've seen death that you could never dream of. And the fact that you would tell me that story means either you never saw it -- or you're a fool." Score one for Brutus. Unlike on HBO's Rome, in which Brutus is the last one to stab Caesar, after he's already practically dead. Anyway, I gave him an 8 - I thought he was an interesting character to throw into the Xena/Caesar/Pompey mix, especially in Endgame. I would've liked to see more of him and see him develop more, though - but at least that means he left me wanting to know more, and not the other way around. Army of Xena

Four Star General Posts: 3990 (07/20/08 3:14 AM) Mostly Harmless Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I rated him a 7, primarily because his real story arc was so short - he was only a real character in Endgame, Ides of March and A&C, with a brief cameo in When Fates Collide. The earlier Brutii were around mostly to hand Caesar his scrolls and run errands, so they can be disregarded. David Franklin invested Brutus with a sense of misguided honor which all too easily segued into willful blindness, and his relationship with Gab was of particular interest - he seemed to place some importance on Gab's opinion of him. It would have been good to see him in earlier eps - he would have been a good addition to WIR, with its political maneuverings and moral grayness.
