Mountain bike or road bike? |
Lead | |
|
I use MassTransit for work, though if I was closer I would most likely try and bike in regularly. Now, I live in Brooklyn, New York in a fairly nice area
called Marine Park. I am near the water, and have some decent bike paths around here, and hope to hit some upstate by early Fall. I have had road bikes, and
found my Trek Mountain bike works better here. I keep the knobby tires, though, since the combined tires do not stand up so well in the city. Makes the biking
tougher, but better. I am hoping to get my milage about fourteen miles plus per ride, but city riding can be really tough. Bike lanes in the city seem to be
extra parking for lazy drivers or, worse, a lane for coming up behind the biker to cut off traffic. I will not say what I think of such critters, other than
may they sit on a nice spike, but otherwise I think city biking is more daring than off-road. I mean, if you survive the canyons (called zero money put in for
street maintenance), the crazed drivers, the in-line skaters that think bikers, fellow skaters, runners, and such can magically avoid them when they decide to
zip in front of you, listening to their Ipods, eyes shut as you come around a corner in the bike lane, and there is dream skater. Ah, the joys of mountain
biking in the city! Despite all this, I love doing it, cause sometimes the wackiness makes the ride more interesting. I admit to having done some basic double
track, but have not gained the skills necessary for really wild stuff. Bless the gifted riders, if they remember do not damage the resource, respect other
users, and do not become one with the tree at the end of the the wild turn! So, what type of bike do you ride, and where do you ride? Have to do a quickie
lunch, then take myself and my bike out for a mini-adventure.

There are some good hybrids around too.

Bradmuffin, sounds great! Woods rather than traffic. Sigh. Agree with Gabfan, there are some good hybrids out on the market, though I find my mountain bike
handles stuff way better.

Mr Gabfan23 is a big mountain bike fan, so he'd agree with you. He only uses road bikes when he has the tag-a-long, so his precious cannondale doesn't
have the indignity of pulling a little gabfan23. I was a real roadie but if I get back to cycling (not done it in two years) I think I'll concentrate more
on off road stuff.

For me it depends on my mood. I collect bikes (mostly old Schwinns) Lately I've been riding this:

Neat bike, CS. I have an aluminum Trek mountain bike and a steel Specialized Hardrock. Both are hard tails, and I love them both. It is a great hobby, and a
healthy one. This weekend I hope to get rides in each day. The weather has been prone to lightning storms, and I have been lucky enough to get my butt home
before a few really wild ones.

Nanziniemi, that is so cool. I wish we had more bike paths and bike racks in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. When I visited Southern California a few years ago,
I noticed that many of the buses had front racks for bikes. Too often bike paths have become extra parking for cars or, worse, shortcuts for drivers seeking to
cut around traffic. Imagine how much junk we could get out of the air if NYC buses and subways were rigged for carrying bikes.

years riding in New York were using a 10-speed Panasonic Villager III. I bought a Trek 3500 mountain bike back in 2004, using the off-road tires that come with
it. Personally, I feel a mountain bike is much better suited for riding in New York City, because the streets can change from pristine to pot-hole ridden. You
have less of a chance to get a flat. Where I ride in New Jersey isn't much better.
Since I can't afford a car, I use the bike. I've ridden in all kinds of weather-rain, snow, ice, blizzards. thunderstorms, sub-zero cold-you name
it, I've ridden in it. If you gotta get to work, you gotta get to work. I keep a can of WD-40 handy.

I got a 1963 Jaguar Mark V this weekend.
It is a two speed automatic. I took it for a spin around the block today. It rides nice but, it's a bit bouncy because the front spring is weak.
