Hercules: You know, maybe someday I'll be ready to slow down, but, you know, for now, I'd rather just keep on walking. Care to join

Season 5 is one giant Rift saga. Even with Iolaus II by his side Herc still can't shake the memories of the original.
The finest emotional stories the series ever had. A likable villain-turned-ally, a disturbing ally-turned-villain. Great foreign episodes. The return of the funny staff clip show. Arguably better than Xena's season 5.

I voted season 5, and mostly in agreement with all the things that "athenasword" listed above. I LOVED the entire season, and it was surprisingly
great despite the fact that Iolaus was gone out of character.
I also liked the really early ones, like seasons 1 and 2. 3 and 4 were Okay. 6 was dreadful.....Why did they even bother with the 8 episodes? Kevin should have just sucked it up and signed another contract for a few more episodes instead of being so stuborn and bitching about Sam Raimi.

Glad to hear from someone else who thought that S6 sucked (although I enjoyed Full Circle, and Hercules, Tramps and Thieves was a nice sendoff for Autolycus).
S5 was definitely the high-water mark of the series - dark and angst-ridden, with creative looks at other mythologies (Sumer, Eire, the Norselands, Zoroastrianism) and a wonderful standout moment between Herc and Iolaus in Resurrection. It even had a cameo by everyone's favorite Roman, Julius Caesar! It also had a great follow-up uber ep in For Those of You Just Joining Us - I never would have recognized Tarama Gorski if I hadn't seen her name in the credits!

Season 5. I especially liked the Norse episodes, the rest of the Dahak episodes, and Revelations. Also Stranger And Stranger and FTOYJJU. Actually
there's not many episodes in Season 5 that I don't really like. I also think more generally it was better that the series had reached a point where it
was established enough to be doing themes/arcs extending over the Season (and longer), and I like all the angst episodes. And of course I liked that Iolaus
came back at the end.
Season 4 is my second favourite, then Season 3.

Season 5 - Iolaus' death, the Dahak arc, and the Eire and Norse eps made for maximum impact - plus, the cinematography was beautiful. Oh, yeah, and For
Those of You Just Joining Us was the best clip show of HTLJ or XWP.

Thought I'd add some S4 love here.
I agree with all the praise heaped on S5, though I have to say that I wasn't crazy about Iolaus II. I'll add that it's been a long time since I've seen those eps. Time for a re-viewing...

Season 5 was the best because it brought Hercules into the realm of a darker show and I thought Iolaus' death for the season premiere was a very
interesting, if very sad, move. It presented Hercules with all sorts of challenges and doubts, and I loved that.
I really don't have a second favorite. Both season 3 and 4 were good and there were episodes that I really liked (especially Armageddon Now and the Hind Trilogy). Season 1 was okay but the stories seemed quite bland then, even the movies had more interest to them than the first season of the show. And season 6 was my least favorite. ![]() XOC Forum Host, Graphic Artist and Technical Administrator

Oh, and the first Herc uber, Yes Virginia, There Is a Hercules, wasn't half bad either. I agree that was a good episode - but wouldn't you count Les Contemptibles as the an uber? (Also a great episode!)

Oh, I haven't seen Less Contemptables. Yes, Virginia, There Is a Hercules was pretty funny (Rob Tapert and fishing!!!), but in my opinion
it wasn't quite in league with For Those of You Just Joining Us. "I'm just an actor"
I can't yet vote in the poll, since FTOYJJU is the only season 5 episode I've seen yet, but I'm making my way through season 4 and enjoying it quite a bit. Well...I'm afraid the Herc comedies rub me the wrong way even more than the Xena comedies (maybe since I'm trying to watch the whole thing on my Gazelle and if it doesn't hold my interest right away, I start wondering how much longer it's gonna take)...but there have been some episodes I've liked very much. Hercules on Trial in particular explored some of the same questions X:WP does, but focused instead on unintentional damage and hero-worship, and it didn't give any easy answers. I'll come back and vote once I've watched my way all the way through the series!

I'm a big fan of S4 as well, so I can understand why people would vote for it - the AN eps were excellent, particularly in the way they were able to work
around Kevin Sorbo's health problems while still keeping him in an important subplot, and Stranger in a Strange
World had one of my all-time favorite shout-outs to The Prisoner.
I agree that several of the S4 Herc comedies were less than stellar - TPTB were desperately trying to figure out what to do while Sorbo was on restricted duty and spawned some fairly dubious eps in the process (Porkules and One Fowl Day spring immediately to mind). I also think that there was still a desire to make sure that there was an ep or two "for the kids," which may explain Beanstalks and Bad Eggs (although no ep with Auto could be all bad). OTOH, this season marked the first appearances of Nebula, as well as the last one of the magnificent Cory Everson as Atalanta, so it all balances out at the end.

I must admit I have rather painful memories of Beanstalks and Bad Eggs, Auto notwithstanding.
Hercules on Trial was a pretty strong episode, IMO.

Sorbo and Hurst had an amusing exchange in their DVD interview for Hercules on Trial -
Sorbo: I remember that I was doing a lot of pontificating . . . Hurst: There was nothing else to do! I can see how they might feel that way as actors, but I thought that Robert Bielak and the other writers did a pretty good job of taking what could have been a pretty dull assignment (quick, cheap bottle show to fill the schedule) and using it to raise some interesting questions. It's also the only time I remember Ares doing on Herc what he so often did on Xena, acting as the Great Tempter and acid commenter on the folly of Herc's do-goodism. I liked the eps where TPTB rounded up some of the characters from earlier eps, and it was great that they could get Claudia Black back to reprise her role in Atlantis. Favorite scene - Lisa Chapell as Dirce questioning herself as Princess Melissa and complimenting herself on her "extraordinary beauty!"

And yeah, that was an unusual role for Ares on H:TLJ -- in a good way. Hmm, which gives me an idea...

Season 5 was my absolute favorite season ever! The character of Morrigan is my favorite character that they ever introduced to the show. Still would have loved
for her to meet Xena. Those two are very similiar in a lot of ways.

Season 5. I really think it's the strongest and most consistent season of the series, even though some episodes I could do without ('Fade Out',
for instance).

For me, Herc was best in S 1. The short season was just boiling with ideas, and at that point, the series felt innovative and I liked that it wasn't
"watered down" for kids yet. Plus it had an excellent run of eps "The Wrong Path," "March to Freedom", The Dionysus ep(forgot the
title), and the Xena trilogy still stand as some of my favorite eps. "The Road to Calydon" is another ep I like with its portrayal of Hera and her
minions.
