A new trend has begun on XOC in the past few weeks. You might have noticed that some people are displaying "userbars" in their signatures: animated gifs that flash through several different images displaying certain interests within the Xena fandom.
Samantha Majka was the one to spark this entire idea because she had been talking about how it would be cool to display a little button or banner in our signatures showing off if we are shipper or subber etc. And everhope took this idea one step further by bringing in the idea of a "userbar": a small 350 x 20 gif image that animates through several different images displaying certain interests.
It has been a really great idea!
Me, TaladarkieJJ, everhope and Nanziniemi--and JustSayNoToNutbread has made some as well--have taken off with this idea and have been creating different
userbars for different aspects of the fandom. Most of them have been based on the main XOC banner at the top of the forum that is a spin-off of the design that
LadyKate had made for various XOC Cafepress merchendise as well as the thread that was started a while back: What type of Xenite? (original version) but these userbars have expanded beyond just the different types of Xenites on the banner and the
thread.
Here are the ones that have been created, the creator is listed beside the userbar in case you choose to credit those who made the ones you use in your sigs

New userbars will continually be added as inspiration hits. If you have a request of a specific one you'd like to see created, post about it in this thread
and one of us will get to creating it and I'll update this first post with all new ones as they come in just like the keepership thread. You are also free
to create one yourself, too.
Guidelines:
- Use this website to generate a userbar: ubanimator.com (allows 10 userbars in one image) or lunapic.com (allows 30 userbars in one image) (you are free, of course, to make the gifs yourself with your
chosen image program--Photoshop, Gimp etc--but this site is so easy and simple to use ) All you have to do is take the url of the userbar images that you would like to use and then create them
from this website. You can choose from the different transition effects and the time delay. It's a really great tool. Then upload the generated userbar
gif to your image hosting account and ta-da! You've got your very own userbar.
- All userbar images must be 350 x 20 and 20k or less (the smaller is always better--most of the above ones aren't more than 10k).
- Keep in mind that the more images you add to a userbar, the larger the gif will become.
- Also keep in mind that by adding a userbar to your signature, it is included in the file size limits of your signature + avatar on XOC, which is 350k total between the two. The userbars can become quite large so it's just something to keep in mind as you choose to add a userbar and continue to use other images in your signature.
- A good tip to keep the file size of your userbar from getting too large: don't use a transition effect. Because one image fades from one to another
it means that it creates even more images inbetween one image to the next in order to create that smooth fade (or image slide, like the Scroll up effect) and
thus the file size of the userbars become larger. 10 images with no transition results in a userbar approx 50k (or thereabouts). A userbar that uses the fade
transition and has 10 images can be nearly 3 times as large.
So, if you want the smallest file size possible don't use a transition. - You are also free to have two userbars in your signtaure if you want to display more than 10 images. Provided, of course, that the file sizes of your
sigs are still not over the limit.
Have fun and feel proud to display your interests with these cute little images if you so choose!
