Something that used to be a big obstacle for my writing was that I thought I had to write from beginning to end.
When I write, I always start out with an outline, something basic that states what the story is about - this happens, then this happen, then this... on and on, writing down things that I want to happen in the story, then I go back and flesh it out, fill in the gaps until it's complete. But I would do it from beginning to end.

Well, oftentimes there's a ceratin part of the story that I know exactly what happens, what the dialogue will be, everything. But I used to think I had to wait until I got to that part to work on it. Eventually I realized that doing that smothered a lot of my creativity. I figured, if I'm being prodded by the Muse on a certain part, then I should go ahead and write that part out.

That way, that certain part won't be in the back of my mind, my brain won't be impatient to get to it and I can concentrate fully on the rest of the story - then just add the completed scene where it belongs when I get to it and tweak it, if necessary.

But that's only for stories that I already have outlines for.

These little random scenes drive me nuts because I want to complete them!

For example, one scene has the main character having a kind of nervous breakdown. The emotion is all there, when different events of the past days build up and echo in the character's mind, which lead to the breakdown. However, how the story starts, what those events are, specifically, and how things are resolved are still a mystery to me. But I have this little gem of a scene all finished and waiting for when I figure it out. LOL

And as a side note: Beginnings have always been the toughest part of any story I write. That first line.
