I just wanted to ask if the show ever made you stop and think about your own sexuality? I'm not necessarily asking you to tell us your orientation. If you don't want to then thats fine. But I have heard of a lot of people who finally accepted their sexual orientation after they saw the show. Did it ever make you stop and think? I watched the show when I was a kid, before sexuality was an issue to be pondered. Then puberty and sexuality happened. I didn't get back into the show until after my sexuality was firmly established and I was basically out to everyone that mattered. One of the reasons I actually got back into it was because I kept seeing it all around "queer culture" and I realised I never did get to finish watching it. Perhaps Xena made me queer!? As a 12 year old girl that didnt cross my mind But as a 15 year old absolutely. And perhaps it made it easier for myself to accept that I waz gay 'If Xena and Gabby are gay and still loved that means I can be:)' I still blame my gayness on X&G hahahaha \| My music vids \| My art \| My Band \|

Watching as a 14 year old, I wasn't really sure of my own sexuality, even though I knew I felt something for Xena. And I didn't even know about the subtext. So sexuality never even entered my head back then, and like Jolly, I got back into the show, after my sexuality had been realised for quite some time. The relationship between X and G has sure made me feel a lot better about it though.

Oh my, quite an eye opener for a married woman! It hasn't made me think about my own sexuality; I like to think I was pretty open-minded before Xena (and fan fic especially) but I think I have got even more open minded. Sorry I know this sounds pretentious, but I do think of it all as a positive experience. And to accept gay people doesn't mean you have to become gay yourself . The way I see it, its just the same as accepting someone who may be larger, a different race or hair colour or anything really. We just seemed to be so much more uptight about sexuality than everything else. One Star General Posts: 221 (03/30/08 7:27 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I'm going to be telling on my age here (apparently, I'm older than most here), but XWP first aired literally a month and half after I came out at the age of 25. I totally missed XWP the first time around because my personal life was completely insane at that time (the whole gf that's too freaked about being gay to come out too syndrome - some of you know what I mean!). Several years ago I got a hold of some fanfiction and realized what I had missed all those years ago, so having XWP on TV really didn't help or hinder my sexuality. Heck, I was in love with Jaclyn Smith of Charlie's Angels and Nancy McKeon on Facts of Life LOOOOONNNNGGGG before XWP was even thought of. LOL I don't know what I would do as a teenager to have gay positive representation!!! That was unheard of.

Two Star General Posts: 1387 (03/30/08 7:36 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I had questioned my sexuality before noticing the subtext of Xena, though I watched it as a child without noticing the subtext -shrug- Anywhoos, the thing that I did love about the show, and I took as a positive was that the relationship was such a beyond sex, beyond gender type of thing. You don't get that much on television, lesbian relationships are openly lesbian, and sex is tossed around a lot. XWP made the connection between the characters so much more than a gay relationship, and I don't think there will ever be anything like the connection between those two characters again. Kind of went off on a tangent there, but what I'm trying to say is that it goes beyond questioning the sexuality, it puts you in a different mindset - like gender is just irrelevant. It was the evolution of the characters and their relationship that convinced me that Xena and Gabrielle were lovers', and I already knew that I was a lesbian for many years. But it did make tons of straight folks I know ask me if X&G were lovers' ( and everyone single one of my straight friends swore the characters were lovers'), and I said I believed they were from the way they related.

One Star General Posts: 582 (03/31/08 3:08 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Watching the show when I was in school...I didn't see the subtext until my friends pointed it out (friends who didn't watch the show mind you) and I kept denying that there was anything beyond frendship between them, even tried to explain away the Quest Kiss - which of course I couldn't successfully. I got called gay and asked if I was gay at school a lot, mainly caus I stood up for gay people generally (no one in school) when someone I knew virbally attacked them constantly. However, in the process of that, and accepting the subtext of the show, I realised my own sexuality, and that I had in fact been in denial for a while. Saying that, long before I came out I had made a comment to my brother in the car (he had the biggest crush on Gabrielle and still likes her to some extant) saying that I thought Gabrielle was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen - yet I didn't think twice about the comment at the time. I came out long before I discovered Xena which was hides face 9 months ago...wow. But, there is definately something about Xena and Gabrielle's relationship that resonates within me. Thats what I want....what we all want probably, in a relationship. It's definately a positive thing to have this series to watch that I can see MY kind of love, and passion, and relationship, instead of the 99.9% straight tv shows/movie relationships. my smart azz reply to this topic was going to be....Xena makes me think about my sexuality EVERY day! I do love Xena/Gabrielle but thats mainly because of how close they are, how they are always there for each other. I hope i will find something like that some day. I'd have to answer: Yes, it made me MORE messed up then be4. I watched the series when I was about 15 and VERY confused about everything in my life/sexuality. (I also had some bad experiences when it came to the opposite sex, so it was easier just to close that door all 2gether.) The subtext scared me ´cuz I had to take a good look at myself and my orientation... So I simply stopped watching it halfway in to season 3. Now many years later I can see why! I´v re-discovered the show and I just LOVE it! I guess I just had to grow up and then give Xena and Gabby a new chance. I'm still working on accepting things about myself but I can handle it better 2day. All´ n ´ all, and/or works equally 4 me.

One Star General Posts: 772 (03/31/08 8:47 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Not really to start with, or for years and years after it ended, it did make me think about a lot of spiritual things, self discovery, and that kind of led to my accepting myself I suppose. But it kind of opened up possibilities for me in my mind. It taught me a lot about not just taking what I was told or heard about and accepting it, but about making my own way, and when I did that I freed myself up to a lot of things. I'm proabably repeating myself a lot, but I am trying to explain something that doesn't want to come out. It made me really look at everything, religion, relationships of all kinds, and made it seem ok to be whoever I was...am, whatever that turned out to be, and so in seeing love on the screen and then getting into online fandom is really where I decided I am gay... I mean I was a child when the show aired, I grew up watching it I never thought about that stuff, never really paid attention to romantic relationships of any kind except in a regency romance book. So I came to the online fandom, and there discovered what a gay person was, I mean I knew some gay people, but we never talked about it, it wasn't as if it was kept from me, but just something no one thought to explore with me. My mum just figured I would figure it out, thought I already had too. In doing that I kind of took it as a check list, yep check look at girls a lot, ok check get feelings, ok check not the same feelings for guys, check, check, check....ohh thats me, like a myspace survery lol. Then I came back to actually watching Xena for a while, but shame on me I don't get the chance to watch the eps much here lately, but I am really involved in other aspects of the Xena fandom. So long way to say, yes and no. No Xena, No Xenaverse! "I wanna talk to you" "The last time we spoke Mr. Smith you reduced me to tears, I can promise you I won't allow that to happen again." I knew I was gay from really early on...or at least that I liked girls. I didn't learn the word "gay" until I was like 10 or 11. I was kinda weird in that I was never really confused about my sexuality. I knew I liked girls (and one in particular) and didn't expect to start liking guys one day just because everyone else did. o_o but of course I knew people wouldn't be okay with that so I kept it under wraps and thought I would always have to. Then one night after I finished watching '3 Ninjas' (I think I was about 12 or 13 by this time), I turned off the VCR and what do I see on CBS but two women in a steaming hot tub together. It was the hot tub scene from Paradise Found, and the moment I tuned in, Gabrielle was rubbing Xena's back and Xena seemed to really like it. I had to do a double take I was so shocked to see this on my tv. Then of course, I looked around to make sure no one saw what I was watching. I finished the episode, it was great, but I wouldn't be able to watch again until the start of season 5. But that little glimpse of X+G on network television gave me alot of hope and made me think that there might be more support for people like me than I thought. The first full episode I got to see was Fallen Angel. Once again, I saw it by chance. I had finished watching some other movie and wasn't tired yet so I left the tv on and Xena started a few minutes after that. I was like oh, cool, let's see what this one's like. And holy crap! I was in love! This was the most amazing show I had ever seen! lol, I think it was because of Paradise Found and Fallen Angel that it took me so long to realize that X+G's relationship was supposed to be subtext! I thought it was as clear as day . I never missed an episode after that. And because this was only "subtext" I was eventually able to watch it openly, with my parents in the room because they wouldn't be able to see what I saw (maybe they did maybe they didn't). The next 2 years were great. Watching X+G kept me from being horribly depressed or insecure about my sexuality. And that may have been what allowed me to come out to my parents at 15. I remember it was May 7th 2001 because after it was all over and (thankfully) my parents were accepting of me, we sat down that weekend to watch Xena and the episode was When Fates Collide. I felt like the universe had just given me this giant cosmic gift for finally coming out. It was like" , here's the best Xena episode ever! Your subtext is maintext!" So yeah...I'm not sure if that was just my life story or how Xena made me think about my sexuality, but...there it is. "Gabrielle knows Xena is her soulmate. And without a word, kisses her. A kiss that's filled with eternity..."
