While looking at the list, there was one in particular that bugged me. The original name for Motherhood was Twilight Of The Gods. I think that Twilight of the Gods is so much more original and satisfying. It also makes it sound more dramatic. Twilight of the Gods was something that was referred to all season long, and to end the season with that would seem to have a sense of pleasing closure to the plot. Which title do you prefer?? Which episode title do you prefer, Motherhood or Twilight of The Gods (Result) Motherhood Twilight Of The Gods

I think I actually like Motherhood better because it's not as direct or specific as Twilight of the Gods. Since it really was based around Xena wanting to save her daughter and not on Xena wanting to kill off all the Olympians. True, that was part of the plot but I don't think that was the important part. I don't think Xena would have killed the gods if they had not attacked her and her child. So, protecting Eve and those she cared about was the most important thing--the death of the gods was a secondary casuality of that IMO. So, I liked it as Motherhood. After all, it kind of reflected back on what Athena said in Amphipolis Under Siege, "The most dangerous animal on Earth is a mother protecting her young." The ending of the season was rather full circle to that, if you ask me.

For one thing I agree that TOTG as a title could take away some of the surprise element in the plot. (Which reminds me, the original title for Endgame was evidently Death of Pompey! Talk about giving the ending away!) But there is another reason as well, and I was actually thinking about that the other day when pondering the various meanings of love on X:WP. (I'll start a thread about that, one of these days.) I think that in S4-6, the show often juxtaposes the abstract "divine love" preached by Eli -- a sort of impersonal, dispassionate, all-encompassing perfect love that embraces everyone equally -- with the personal, intense, imperfect human love that singles out particular individuals, and finds in favor of the latter. Ultimately, the Twilight of the Gods turns out to be not about the ideals of one god vs. many, or the god of (divine) love vs. the pantheon; it's about Xena's love for her child, and Xena's willingness to do anything for her daughter.

Gabrielle: "What is the twilight?" Xena: "The Fates spoke of a time when mankind would no longer need the gods and they would lose their power." So,actually there was no "twilight" persay because all of mankind wasn't shown to no longer "need" the gods period and they kept Aphrodite later regaining Ares. Instead the gods who got whacked feared a prophecy and were cause for their own demise. They didn't simply lose their power either rather were killed off as a result of their persuit to kill Xena's child. Oh definitely about a Mother's claws --aka Motherhood.

I've always considered characters more important than the plot. The plot should exist to serve the characters, not the other way around. Motherhood is about the characters, while Twilight of the Gods is about the plot. Characters win.
