Warrior-in-Training Posts: 137 (03/12/08 6:04 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : xena, fanfic I have just finished a rare fanfic-one that deals with hurt/comfort (that's common enough) but has one of the charcaters not recovering fully by the end of the fiction despite a relatively long passage of time passing. As a great devourer of fan fic, I do guiltily enjoy a good hurt/comfort story but find in the majority they recover very quickly or are miraculosly aided by a God/magic woman/potion to recover. Other than the ones where one of them dies, they are rarely left with a debilitating injury or a long recovery (there is one good story that I have forgotten the name of, set S6 sometime and Gabrielle gets a bad shoulder injury and tries to hide it from Xena but she realises and they settle down after realising Gabrielle is unable to fight anymore). I know the series was like that, rarely were injuries carried over (Joxer post King Con springs to mind as good continuity though). I am struggling to think of more than a handful where there is no incredible and complete recovery. What are your thoughts? Don't care? Like it to follow the show and have quick recoveries? Or like me like to see more than the odd one dealing with the harsh life on the road? And would any of our dear talented fan fic writers leave one of the main characters permanently disabled or injured? Thank you for your time. I don't think I could fully understand a situation like that because I have no good personal reference point and it would therefore never feel true. So on disabilities no, on death yes. For the right story I wouldn't hesitate to kill on of them. I like a good tragedy and a death is more manageable from a writers perspective, or from my perspective with my personal experiences. Otherwise on the Hurt/Comfort scene I'm somewhat of an amateur and I know very little, it's not something I tend to read. Though now when you mention it, I wouldn't mind a few recommendations. Years ago though I did read an X-Files one where Mulder was permanently paralyzed from a gunshot wound. At first I thought I really wouldn't like it, but the story ended up being very compelling and I did enjoy it quite a bit. I wouldn't want to read a lot of them but I'd be open to the idea in a Xena fanfic for a change of pace if it was an interesting story and not just a "woe is me" tome. I could see an interesting dynamic if Xena had to deal with the loss of being a warrior and trying to find new ways to continue her life's work of atonement. Gabfan23, the one you mentioned about Gabrielle's shoulder sounds interesting.

Does that still count? I think in general, unless it's an AU or something like that, I would prefer to have my fics follow the show, simply because it would feel more "familiar" to the tone of the Xenaverse as established in canon. Of course, if it's AU or uber, where it's not quite canon, I will tolerate more deviation from the familiar tone of the show. "Would you kindly....?" --Charles Atlas, BioShock

I've got a hurt/comfort story slated on my TO DO list in the future but I've got a number of stories to write before I get to that one. I think it's an interesting concept whenever it's done by other authors. Anything that brings out the emotional humanity of the characters is great. Absinthe Angel 777's Xena Fan Fiction! And I can't remember where I read it either. The former is http://www.academyofbards.org/fanfic/g/greenheron_spirit1.html I struggled to get into at first but enjoyed it towards the end and the ending was very sweet. Falling by grit jahnning has gabrielle living after being injured/tortured by Caesar. However it is not finished... JollyApe The athenum has a good search facility were you can select H/C stories. A couple of good stories are Beyond and Forever by Pallas and When it Hurts the Most by RG Heller. Both are tearjerkers. You'll need a box of kleenex at your side. Other good ones are Silences and Natural Causes by Mayt which are typical of mayt's writing-excellent- although I thought in both of them especially Natural Causes the ending was rushed and did suffer from "miracle cure syndrome". I have read so many where "miracle cure syndrome" happens. I must be a real depressive-give me a long difficult recovery and I'll be happy!! Daughter of Tieran do you have links to your fiction? I think LJ Mass's To Become A Queen is a great hurt, comfort fic.
