What is your favorite "Roman" episode on X:WP? By "Roman" I mean episode dealing with the theme of Xena (and Gabrielle) vs. Rome or
individual Roman leaders. I've left Looking Death in the Eye off the list because while Romans (and specifically
Octavius) have some involvement in the events of the episode, it's very minor. For the same reason I've left out Path of Vengeance which has a minor Roman theme.
That leaves Destiny, The Deliverer, When in Rome, A Good Day, Endgame, Ides of March, Antony & Cleopatra, Livia, Eve, Legacy, The God You Know, and When Fates Collide. Of these, which is your favorite episode? and why? What is your favorite "Roman" episode? (Result) |

I've gone for Ides of March, mainly due to Gabrielle's "moment" near the end.

WIR for me. Watching X and C try to outmaneuver each other politically is a wonderful treat, and I particularly loved Caesar's "Oh s***" moment
at the end when he sees it's Crassus down there, not Vercinix. The "party" scene between the two of them and Caesar trying to put the moves on
Xena only to get shot down--"I have to go to the bathroom. Are you *finished* yet?" was just great. Getting a look at Caesar's and Pompey's
interactions was fun as well--I loved the scene at the games, particularly Pompey's look of frustration that Caesar was still alive, and his clear
enjoyment of the trap Xena had set for Caesar. If anything, I wish there had been more interaction between Xena and Pompey, as there was a potentially very
interesting dynamic there.
AGD was good, to be certain, but I enjoyed WIR so much that I have to say, I almost wish they'd gone with another political ep in its place, rather than going for a battle (although it was fun to watch Xena finally get the chance to vent some of her hatred for Caesar onto him personally, in the three-way fight). |

This was a tough one. I was torn between Destiny and Ides of March but ultimately voted for Destiny for the

Hard choice between Ides of March and When Fates Collide, but I'm a hardcore subber at heart, so of course I had to choose WFC. Katherine Fugate does such
a good job writing this episode, and Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor bring the characters to life in a way I've never seen before. First of all, the
balcony scene was just
Seeing how Xena reacted to meeting Gabrielle for the first time was great! Plus, it was awesome to watch a guy be jealous of
Xena and Gabrielle's relationship, instead of the other way around. Also, the jail scene and the funny line "Your hands on me, like they were last
night" doesn't hurt! Ides of March comes in a VERY CLOSE second though, the jail scene in there breaks my heart everytime I watch. Just the
feelings between Xena and Gabrielle are... wow.

Ugh, that was hard to choose. I voted When Fates Collide, with a few runner-ups: Ides of March, A Good Day and Eve.

That's easy. Even though When Fates Collide is one of my favourite episodes there is only one XWP episode that resembles perfection and that is
Ides of March. There is nothing about IOM that I dislike and the way it's done is just perfect.
One day I'll write an essay on the reasons why it's perfect, but not today. |

I'm torn between five of them!
When in Rome, A Good Day, Endgame and finally, Ides of March are all on my favourites list because of Gabrielle's struggle with war and violence within them. And of course, When Fates Collide, because it's beautiful. |

When In Rome, The Deliverer or When Fates Collide.
Went with When In Rome, it really captured the Roman theme. |

Chose a Good Day. The first time Gabrieklle has ever really had to deal with a war in a battle sense. The little speech Xena gives her about it being a good
day's fighting.
Plus Stephen Lovatt before Hades. |

This is a hard one LK! It's difficult to choose, but maybe 'Ides of March', It's a
good episode, they made a pretty good job on it.

This is a tough question, as so many of the eps listed are very high quality. I eliminated episodes in which Rome plays a supporting rather than central role
in the drama. so The Deliverer, Livia, Eve and Legacy are out - they're all good, but for reasons other than the Xena/Caesar/Rome equation. I also ruled out A&C and
TGYK, as the Rome dynamic had changed so much by that time that it served largely a backdrop for Xena to play Queen of the Nile or the "Celtic goddess of
sex." That leaves the core of the Xena/Caesar conflict - Destiny, WIR, AGD, Endgame, IOM and WFC.
Still a very hard call - I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Destiny, a gorgeous ep that was responsible for me becoming a X:WP fan, but in the end I have to opt for When in Rome. Steve Sears did a wonderful job in transposing the RL First Triumvirate to the Xenaverse, and the devious game of mutual manipulation between Caesar, Pompey and Xena was a joy to behold. Jeremy Callaghan gave his best Pompey performance here, and he got some excellent material to work with. The moral dilemma Gab was faced with was also well-handled, and Sears' writing made clear that while all of the surface political fireworks were going on, Gab's choices were the real heart of the episode. This is an ep that makes me rethink my previous opinions every time I rewatch it, and I can't think of higher praise than that. |

I went with WFC, but just by a nose. Such beautiful moments between Xena and Gabrielle. *happy sighs*
Caesar learns he can't really outrun his destiny, Alti gets hers. And Gabrielle torching the loom? Wow. IoM was just beautifully done as well and Gabrielle fighting and the jail scene gets me every time. Plus, this really is more how I see/would like to see the show ending - with them going out together, not one left to go on alone. That is, if the show had to end with death, rather than just going off into the sunset.
CasualFan makes excellent points for WiR, it's a really great Gabrielle ep offset with some interesting political shenanigans. I'd definitely agree it was the best Pompey episode as well. He was so gleeful that Caesar had to give the people what they wanted, but hadn't yet moved into the over the top acting to show that. Really though, could have happily voted for any of these three and my thoughts on which to pick could very well change day by day. |

So many good ones, but I feel like I have to go with 'Destiny'. As others have stated this was the episode that introduced Caesar and Rome. Runner-ups
include 'When in Rome . . .' and 'Ides of March'.

Endgame. I just liked Xena's whole demeanor in that one. My girl
was like "don't start none, won't be none". She was NOT playing.

I have to agree with Casual Fan that The Deliverer, Livia, Eve and Legacy are episodes in which the "Roman" storyline is not
central, but subordinated to something else. I would say that the same is true of When Fates Collide -- the Xena/Caesar situation, which could have
been developed in some very interesting ways in this setting, is really only a backdrop and plot device for the theme of Xena and Gabrielle's transcendent
soulmatedness. However, I have to say that Antony & Cleopatra definitely has the feel of a "Roman ep" to me, despite the added layers of
sensuality and exotica; the conflict of values between Xena and Antony was very much about Rome, and Antony's hard, ruthless commitment to authoritarianism
at home and imperialism abroad as "the Roman way."
Ides of March loses a couple of points in my eyes for the "Way of the Warrior" stuff and the "Caesar as Satan's pawn" motif. My top two choices are Destiny and When in Rome... MoyCullen makes an excellent case for the former, and Casual Fan and Daughter of Tiaran for the latter. For me the balance tips ever so slightly in favor of WIR -- the dynamic between Xena, Caesar and Pompey is truly fascinating, as is Gabrielle's struggle with her moral dilemma. |

When in Rome and A Good Day are both tops for Roman episodes. Both feature Xena manipulating Roman politics, and Gabrielle's moral dilemma are handled wonderfully and never descends into melodrama. In both episodes, I felt for Gabrielle's choices, and the end of A Good Day, Xena's speech to the numb Gabrielle about sometimes it's just 'a good day' is poignant and resonated with me. No easy answers lie there. The Triumverate and Xena showing Ceasar how *over* him she is is always fun to watch. Plus the arena fight in WIR is one of Xena's best. |
