What makes a hero? |
Lead | |
|
Is it doing something brave, something selfless, is it some little act, or does it have to be something huge?

I think it depends on the individual, to be honest.. and the situation. Which really doesn't help this thread much, but I think somebody may be a hero to
one person and a complete anti-hero to others. It's like I could say Xena is my hero, but a lot of people just wouldn't get it unless they were a xena
fan. So I think heroism is all about the perception of the people judging it.

Wow, this question made sooo many thoughts run through my head at the same time lol.
I know people we look up to, wether they are heroic or not by standard terms are classed as heroes. The last time I asked who my heroes were I said that anyone who has came into my life and made me want to move heaven and earth for them, even for a moment are my heros. I think though, this quote sums up my idea of a heor perfectly. "A hero does not lack fear, they act in spite of it" I dont even know where thats from, but its my perfect idea of a hero. They dont have to be saving lives, they just have to take on thier fears and do something they believe is right.

Well, Carol Burnett is my hero because she is always true to herself no matter how hard things get. But my nephew is my true hero because he selflessly gave
his life for our freedoms. He knew he might die, he talked about it, but he felt it was the right thing to do.

To me a hero is someone who embodies all the strengths and values that I admire, but they also need to have a weakness. I don't believe in infallible
hero's, they have to be human and will have their own demons to battle, because we all do and fighting your own darkness is just as difficult as fighting
for your beliefs in society.

I think a hero is someone who thinks of others first. That's one reason why I love episodes like Tsunami. Beyond the flashy effects and fight scenes, Xena
shows us in this ep what it means to be a hero.

To me, a hero is someone one looks up too. It doesn't matter what they do, to them, that person could achieve anything. I have the case of hero worshipness. I praise many people and wish to be just like them, or value their morals.

They need to be street-wise, strong, fast, sure, soon, larger than life and fresh from the fight.

Some one who will do anything and everything for you,
Some one who will reach for the stars and not let anyone get in thier way, Some one that willl go to the other side of the world, for something so simple.. Some one that would die for you, Some one thats close to you and can make you smile and laugh, The one person who makes you who you are.. Is your HERO! That was lame.. This reminded me of the TV show, Hereos.. i love that show.. especially Nicholas D'Vagos..HOT! hehe

Oh, CTS, I love Heroes too. I think all the parts where Hiro debates what it means to be a hero, are so relevant to this discussion, too.
JC, you said this very well: I don't believe in infallible hero's, they have to be human and will have their own demons to battle, because we all do and fighting your own darkness is just as difficult as fighting for your beliefs in society. Well said...battles can be both inside and outside. I think that sometimes we overuse the term "hero." Because there's a sense in which everyone can be a hero. There's also a sense in which heroes are the people who step up and do incredible, necessary, selfless things, and we try to want to be like them without being threatened by them (if they are something we cannot be). Superchick has this song called "Hero": You can be a hero, heroes do what's right You can be a hero, you might save a life You can be a hero, you can join the fight For what's right. I like that because it's the more universal sense where everyone can be a hero, because I think it's really important to act out of a sense of right and wrong, and because we don't know the impact we have. As people, we need each other, and I think we save each other's lives in more senses than just the "pull you out of the river" sense. So maybe that's what I think a hero is. Someone who walks with another, regardless of sacrifice or cost, and who does what is right.

A hero is someone who can make you smile when you feel you have nothing in the world to smile about.
A hero is someone who offers you half their sandwich when you get stuck working OT and have no food. A hero is someone who text messages you all night when you feel like your gonna lose it to your anxiety. A hero is someone with a kind word when you have a frown on your face. A hero holds your hair up when you're puking after you drown your sorrows all night in a bottle of Whisky! |
