I've read before that all the Buffy season enders could serve as series' enders, just in case they got cancelled (with the possible exception of s2). However, since he was not doing well in negotiations with WB, The Gift was definitely made to act as the series' end if they hadn't gotten picked up by UPN for the last two seasons. That finale, even more than Chosen, had me totally twisted up for the whole hour, because I was sure at various points that Anya, Xander, Giles, Spike or Dawn wasn't going to make it. It never occured to me that Joss would kill his star, but when it happened, it made such perfect sense, I was awed by it.

Chosen just made me hurt because by then, my trust in Joss was broken and I felt he just enjoyed killing his characters simply for the sick enjoyment of watching fans get worked up over it, not because it 'made sense to the story'.

I completely agree, though, The Gift is the perfect ending for the story of Buffy Summers. I'm glad, though, that we got two more seasons, because I then got my Spuffy.
