I don't remember having a thread like this before, to answer one of your questions.

I've never known what I wanted to do in life. Like any kid I had a few fleeting ideas, like vet or teacher, but they seemed impracticle, or not for me. I'm much better at deciding what I don't want to do. So in high school I had no idea what to major in and was very glad that I could say I was an 'undecided major' all freshman year. At the very end of freshman year I declared myself to the university as an English major. There are three types of English major: Creative Writing, One that wants to teach English, and a General or Literature English major. I am the last one. Again, that is because I didn't know what I wanted to do and I knew that neither of the other types of English major were like the kind of careers I wanted. I have a minor in history. If all goes well this semester I will be a college graduate with a major in English and a minor in History.

Where does that put me in the workforce? No freakin clue. I've been trying to figure that out for the last 8 years (high school and college). Nothing that conventionally goes with 'English' appeals to me. I only know that I excell at reading and interpreting, not grammar, syntax, etc. And I'm not creative enough to make my living from it, so there goes writing, and I hate (despise) research so um there goes journalism, and news papers, and law school, and legal assistants, and whatever else.

Now I'm thinking about following my dad's advice and looking at graduate school. Liberal Arts looks like something I may end up doing. Maybe THEN I'll have figured out what career is for me.


I have a friend who is a psychology major. She wants to get into clinical psychology. The amount of schooling she needs to get anywhere in that field boggles my mind. And the courses she needs to take would have stopped me long ago (calculus I and II among them). Psychology (and sociology) has always interested me but I could never do all of that just to get my degree. How far along are you in college? Do have a senior paper or project to complete (probably huh?). If so, do you know what it is yet?

All English majors have to do a 20-35 page (6,000 word) senior thesis. There is no set topic, we're all doing our own thing, but we meet in a regular class to discuss it. There are about 18,000 students in my college, there is only one senior thesis (mandatory) class. Do you know how many classmates I have? about 15! How that happened I don't know because I always have other English classes of atleast 40 people. Okay, sorry for the unnecessary info, but that just bugs me.
