I was just thinking, what is the most iconic subtextual image? I always see the same few images posted when subtext is brought up in articles, banners and icons (like thoes "What subtext? banners). So, below are the seemlingly reoccuring ones and this poll is to determine THE MASTER SUBTEXT PICTURE that owns all others.

1. Callisto - The Promise
2. The Quest - The Kiss
3. ADITL - The Bath
4. Between the Lines - The Mendhi
5. Heart of Darkness - The Dance
6. AFIN II - The Water Kiss

So, what image is the face of subtext/maintext? (Result)

The first thing I thought of was the Return of the Valkyrie kiss, just because it's such a beautiful image and it seems iconic to me.

I'll return with an actual answer as of now, I'll just write stuff.

The first Callisto one is the original to me. That's where it began for real, so it does hold a special place.

The hottub one is another one of those classic ones. It's a signifier for when subtext was an established and re-occuring and important element of the show.

The Valkyrie one is the one I think of when I think of them as a couple, the most iconic picture showing them as lovers. Where subtext no longer was sub, but rather main.

However as of now I'm leaning towards the Quest one, because even though it was not the most thought-through kiss or even the most important, it is still iconic. Not just on this show, but it's iconic in a general television kinda way. They did something unheard of one television at that point.

Yeah, I'll go think for a bit and return with an answer.

From the choices above, my maintext scene would be HOD. Sorry I just can't dance like that with a 'friend' unless is was a school drama or something.

Nice 'school drama' X&G got going there.

Otherwise, my ultimate subtext scene is from Family Affair. "I searched for you." Awwwwwww.

I voted the Quest, not because it's my favorite but I think it's the quintessestial subtext photo. Like the one the media might choose when referring to subtext. My own personal subtexts favorites, I'm not sure...too hard to pick!

I went with The Quest, but the scene and not just the screen cap is what it came down to. I kent halp eeet!
'Cause if I was trying to show my 'friend' I was in someone else's body and to prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt...it wouldn't be by laying one on 'em. Just sayin'

They all have their points though and taken all together the evidence seems quite overwhelming and undeniable.

Geez this is tough.

My vote is for the Quest. It is the first time we see them share something that is more than a hug or a peck. Xena was definately going for a full lip lock. The later pics (HOD, FIN) are when subtext became maintext. TQ shows them taking that step towards something more than just friends.

I voted for The Quest, since it is the first REAL sub/maintext moment in the show, not to mention that I just LOVE that scene!

The Quest kiss. It has the ambiguity (of Auto's body) but obviousness (there's nothing ambiguous about how Xena leans down, flicks her eyes down to Gabrielle's mouth and back up to her eyes while she parts her lips) needed for THE iconic image of X:WP subtext.

I love when Gabrielle opens her eyes and sees the real Xena again after having accepted her death, with that music playing in the background. *sighs*

Yes, it's true, X/A is what gets me out of bed in the morning. Or, you know, in.

But I wasn't blind when I watched the show. And I know I saw Xena's eyes flicker to Gab's mouth right when she was leaning down. Not a lot of ways around that scene.

Which is why I picked it for the iconic moment.

I voted..... gulp.... AFIN. I love that pic, its just seems to be definitive (sp?). My favorite is the Mendhi scene/Pic though.

To me even seeing the subtext, my best friend and I do some of that other stuff all the time, well okay not the bath, or the kiss in Quest I mean we've posed like that-in acting class for a scene, but i've done that with other people, and there was nothing subtexty about that to me. For the record I'm just very comfy with my body and my close friends and relations.
But the kiss in AFIN was just there is no mistaking that to me.
