Yes, regarding Hope toward Callisto, I have to agree with the majority here and say that it was only a business arrangement. I just don't think Hope had the attention for so many different kinds of relationships. She was already trying to understand how Gabrielle could both love her and send her away, then try to kill her, all at the same time; she was also already working all-out to bring about Dahak's plan, and she didn't have the energy for anything else. I'd like to toss out one more theory, too. I want to walk carefully, especially since it's been so long since we've had a Hope thread! The way I like to think of Hope, though (even if it takes away from some of the moral dilemmas in this story), is that she wasn't ever actually an individual with a consciousness and desires of her own, that she was, like Xena said, just an instrument, and it was actually Dahak working through her. (That didn't make Gabrielle's loss any less real, although that's a subject for another debate.) I think there was some level on which Dahak wanted Gabrielle's love. He saw her as the one who'd sacrifice her innocence, and then Gabrielle thought that meant he saw something dark in her soul, and later, I think he wanted her on their side. It wasn't that important to him, but he was willing to give it a try. Anyway, that's just how I read that scene.

Getting back on topic, though, I do think Callisto was attached to Hope. When she said "you should have been my child," I read that as she was saying that she should have had Gabrielle's place in Dahak's plan. One of the things that made Dahak so frightening, in my opinion, was the fact that he had public opinion on his side because the people wanted a better world. It's one of those age-old debates. Utopia isn't possible (and when we try it, there are plenty of instances in literature when it's gone horribly wrong). But a better world is and should be possible. I think it's possible to form a world where violence might be necessary but vengeance isn't the rule, for one thing. Dahak promised a quick and easy road to that world. No matter what else she was feeling or doing, Callisto always seemed to be searching for a way to end the pain in her heart. Some of the ways she tried were ludicrous (giving it to Xena, fighting Xena for eternity in Tartarus, spending her life just being angry and nothing else)...that fire that sometimes scared even her, that she wanted put out. So I can see her being enamoured with Dahak's world. I think she thought she would have been more worthy than Gabrielle to carry out that part of Dahak's plan, and yes, that she envied Gabrielle's innocence. (She's even said that, that she was doing Gabrielle a favor by letting her depart this world still having her innocence.) So I think Callisto saw Hope as a reminder of a place she hadn't had, and as someone who was still working for the world she wanted. But when Hope betrayed Callisto, Callisto switched sides.
