For those who aren't aware, pay attention...and for those who are, here's a reminder... In a year, your old analog TV sets will be garbage. 2009 is when TV signals go digital. Frankly, this news should have been more widespread previously, but as far as I've seen, it's been limited only to certain areas-and I've not heard much on the radio. This will suck for me, since my family has several TVs. I also have a small portable Radio Shack LCD color TV that works well-but which will be obsolete in a year. So-if you're not aware of this news, you'd better start doing some reading/research as to what to do. A year may seem like a lot of time-but many people have busy lives. For busy folks, time flies.

I've been aware of this for over the last year and a half-partly because I'm interested in media, and partly because I have friends who are tech-heads who read up on this kind of stuff. I wonder how many stores have been trying to unload their old analog TV sets onto unsuspecting customers. I feel particularly bad for poor folks. All they could rely on is an old-most likely, used-analog TV, and now they'll have nothing. I understand there are supposed to be converter boxes you can get to view the digital signal on an analog TV. I'm not sure as to how much they are. I have to head out, but if I have time to dig up some more news on this, I will. Or perhaps other members on the board can post stuff. Like I said-some folks may wonder what all the fuss is about, since this is a year away. And I am not the most well-informed person. So I don't think its kept in the corners quite as much as you think. For instance, recently my local TV station made a special program to specifically address this issue and answer any questions they thought people might have. They aired it many times. Moderator One Star General Posts: 955 (01/01/08 4:08 PM) Champion of Soulmatedness Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	relax. all is well. your tv's will not be garbage. the government is offering a $40 coupon for digital convertor boxes for all those people that don't have hd tv's or cable or satellite. the box is going to be approximately $70 so the out of pocket cost is only about $30. the conversion is 13 months away so start saving your pennies now. i work in television so i've known about this for about 8 or 9 years. the date kept getting pushed back. i believe 9/11 pushed it back as well since so many ny stations lost their broadcast antennaes when the wtc fell and they had to be replaced. networks didn't particularly want this conversion either. and little tv stations really didn't want it since they had to come up with the $$$$ to convert. but the time is almost upon us and there's nothing we can do about it. The vouchers are reportedly going to be made available starting February or March. And as Sais pointed out, if you have cable or satellite or are HD-ready on TV, you have nothing worry about. The move is make the analog frequencies available to first responders. I think we can be a little inconvienced to allow our police and fire people to get more coverage for their communications. Also-I'm curious about portable TVs-are there any out there now that can take digital signals?

I still say that it depends on where you are and where you look for news. I've seen and heard occasional mentions of this in my area-much more though my friends. I live in the New York area, and there hasn't been much talk about this, which is surprising to me.
