Yes, those trees were indeed blinking on and off -- that's partly why I wanted to shoot it on video.

The nighttime photos are hard work -- the camera has to be set at low-light settings, which means that the shot is taken in several "layers" over 3-4 seconds during which the camera needs to be completely stationary, otherwise the shot will be all blurry. Either you have to lug a tripod around and set it up whenever you want to take a picture, which is kind of a pain in the @ss (especially in cold weather because you usually have to take your gloves off to secure the camera on the tripod), or you have to find a flat surface to use as a support for the camera (like some kind of ledge or pedestal). I'm without a tripod on this trip, so I've had to improvise all sorts of creative supports for the camera including the tops of trash cans.

Also, you have to regulate the settings to get the right amount of lighting.

But it pays off!

Maria Regina Martyrem is the official name of the church, but I've heard the memorial one too.
