My more romantic side would really liked to have seen Xena appear to her loved ones during her final moments (the battle scene where she dies). It would've given her a chance to reach out to Ares and Eve. Eve could've been in a prayer trance when Xena "connected" with her and said her goodbye and Ares could've been sleeping and she came to him in a dream...and I know Gods dream because Zeus said so himself in GFC.

For Eve it could be about Eve first begging Xena not to go through with it (even though it is too late), but Xena telling her she has to and Eve currently being in a position of lifelong repentance, understands what Xena feels like she has to do. As for Ares, since the writers were being ambiguous and not wanting to out them officially as a couple, it could be more of a scene where Xena is dying in his arms but there's a peaceful silence surrounding them amidst the chaos. She softly says his name and he rubs her cheek with the back of his hand and he is trying to be brave but he's dying inside. He asks her why does she always have to be so stubborn and she just smiles slightly. He asks her to let him take her away from all of it, but she says she can't, she has to finish it...she has to make things right and he can't find the words to speak so he just rocks her. She asks him to watch over Gabrielle and jokes that if he even thinks of pulling any funny stuff with her she'll come back and haunt him. He begs her not to leave him and she struggles to smile telling him something along the lines of "our timing has always sucked hasn't it". He cradles her closer, kisses her head and is fighting back tears, rage and every grieving emotion. And then she says "Ares" and he says "yes" and she looks right into his eyes and says "I.." and then her eyes glaze over. He knows what she meant to say and us shippers know what she means but it's still ambiguous enough for the general audience. Ares bolts awake panting and realizes what happenend in reality, kind of like how Aphrodite felt it when Haephestus died.
