Was Corinth The Only Town In Ancient Greece? |
Lead | |
|
This is something that I kinda noticed
throughout the entire Xena series, but now as I rewatch my Hercules DVD's I noticed that he mentions it too. For some odd reason both Xena and Hercules
mention that they're going to Corinth ALOT of times during the series. Apparently Corinth is the only happening town in Ancient Greece where almost
everything and anything (good or bad) happens. I guess it's just laziness on the writer's part. We should make it a drinking game to see how many times
Corinth is either referenced to or Xena & Hercules mention that they're going to it throughout their series'
.

Athens was mentioned quite a bit, as well as Amphipolis and Poteidaia. Also Marathon, Tripolis, and Thessaly and Troy...to name a few. But yes, Corinth WAS
mentioned a lot!

Isn't there a joke that every location in Xenaverse/Hercaverse is about two days' ride from Corinth?
But actually ... I don't recall Corinth being mentioned all that much other than in the context of the Battle of Corinth, no? Which, of course,
was a pretty huge event in Xena's life. I think Athens was mentioned more often, in fact -- I recall that Ephiny and Phantes were headed to Athens in
IDAITH before they got caught up in the civil war. And wasn't it in Athens that the drug for Xena's blindness was mentioned as being available in
Blind Faith? Not to mention the Athens Academy of Performing Bards. (Btw, in When Fates Collide Gabrielle was known as "the visionary
voice of Athens.")
It's kind of interesting that Amphipolis and Potadeia were both depicted as villages or small towns in the show, in reality they were rather large cities. Oh and I'm pretty sure that Thessaly was a province of Greece, not a city. Other cities I remember offhand: Actus was the city under siege in Past Imperfect, and Pyraeus was the "theater city" in The Play's the Thing. I wonder if they're even real cities, or made up ones?

I wonder if they're even real cities, or made up ones? There's a Greek city called Piraeus. Maybe that's the city you're thinking of? http://www.greece-athens.com/place.php?place_id=38 Let's not forget that Thebes was mentioned at least once on "Xena" and was even the setting of a "Hercules" episode ('Rebel Without a Cause').

Very interesting I never thought about it before. And I agree I think aside from Athens Thessaly gets mentioned a lot.

Random question on the same note. Was Delphi ever mentioned?

I believe it was, Jolly. Wasn't it "the oracle at Delphi" that Callisto was targeting in Callisto?

Yeah I think you're right, I knew it must be in there, I'd just forgotten where.
Got another question. Were we ever given an explanation as to why The Conquerer choose Corinth as her capital? Was there any historical reasons behind that? I'm no expert in Ancient Greek History, but the only thing I think I might remember about Corinth was that it had a famous Temple dedicated to Aphrodite. Or am I remembering incorrectly?

Maybe for sentimental reasons because of the Battle of Corinth?
Who knows.
