I had to think a little on this one. Weighed every conceivable notion down and came up with the unthinkable.

It was Xena's fault.

However it did escalate to both being to blame, it was just one lie and action begatting another.

Although in Sacrifice Xena was there for Gabrielle. But Xena became increasingly distant as the strange pregnancy took hold.

Would the story have played differently if they hadn't gone to Britania if Xena's hatred for Caesar wasn't so high on her revenge list. It may have been an elaborate set of circumstances, but Xena did ignore them until Caesar's name was mentioned.

Gabrielle's mind was already tainted with guilt. Her giving Hope a second chance may have been blind, but I don't think anyone would watch her kill a baby. It would be so against her principals of life. She had accidentaly killed another human being. She didn't mean to, and basically she only held the dagger, the other woman stepped into the blade. Gabrielle's world changed. She fell into a deep despair, and in that moment of depression, Dahak took his chance.
So we're dealing with a young woman who's sanity has been destroyed by everything she believed in.

Where was Xena? Was Xena there for her? Or was she battling her own demons?
Xena had secrets too. Lots of secrets as it turns out. Maybe she was blind by what was happening to Gabrielle. She definitely felt guilty. But Xena keeps her feeling bottled up inside {like a man }, so the one person that Gabrielle trusted was already growing distant from her.

So who started the fire? Xena did.
