Was Gabrielle a Real Amazon?
I didn't see any character development in Gabrielle to make me accept her as a true Amazon until season 5. It has always bothered me that Terreis gave Gabrielle her right of caste and that the Amazons so easily bowed to Gabrielle (and Xena) after Melosa was defeated in Hooves and Harlots. Making Gabrielle queen was just a plot device to give control of the Amazons to Xena. We all know about the power struggle that ensued because Gabrielle installed Melosa as regent but kept the right of caste for herself. Gabrielle's tribe suffered because Gabrielle was a) incapable of leading them without Xena and b) not present because she was following Xena. So the Amazons had Ephiny as their regent for a brief time and we can assume they had many other regents because Gabrielle only showed up periodically. Eventually the Amazons must have heard Gabrielle was dead and since they didn't see her for 25 years they had to start from scratch.
Gabrielle became a more believable leader in seasons 5 and 6, but from what I remember she was not with Greek Amazons in those seasons. So it seems like the gamble that Melosa's tribe of Greek Amazons took by honoring Gabrielle's right of caste was not worth it for them. I think that at the time Gabrielle was given the right of caste and became queen she was not a real Amazon because she was not ready for it. Gabrielle became a capable Amazon queen about 30 years later (thanks to the 25 year leap!), but by that time she was not doing anything good for Terreis/Melosa's Greek tribe and overall the Amazon nation all over the world was at the brink of extinction.
