It is clear that someone behind the scenes of XWP was very interested in religion because every season has at least one episode that deals with an outside religion not of the Greek gods. The show started with a reference or two to Christianity in the first couple of seasons, but as the show went on non-Greek gods were showing up with greater frequency. From season 3 until the end of the series Xena featured Chinese religion, Dahak, Hindu religion, Amazon Shamanism and the God of Love. These religions tended to dominate the major story arcs of the last 3 seasons and they had major impacts on the lives and afterlives of the protagonists. For instance, the Hindu religion established that Xena and Gabrielle's souls are always destined to be together in every life, and the Chinese religion was responsible for both empowering Xena at one point and causing her irreversible death at another point.
Did the religion overload help or hurt the show?
Although I enjoy some of the religious diversity on the show I think it did get out of hand.
