I've only seen the first teaser trailer (and I stopped there, I don't want to spoil any more) but it looks like something I would love! The Queen, reminds me of the Mirror Queen from the Brothers Grimm movie (same original story). A bit off topic, but have you seen these photos of celebrities as Disney characters?

It's like there is a trend of giving villains sympathetic back stories for no other reason than to put a slant on an otherwise cliché theme. It would be a great idea if it was done well, but in most cases it is absolutely not.... like this one, for example. So, we get to see that the queen was a captive of some sort, suffered some kind of abuse or heartbreak at the hands of a former lover and has a genuine reason for her vanity. We are then shown absolutely no character development, and at the end of the story she is killed off as traditionally and unflinchingly as any of Disney's one-dimensional baddies. The point of giving a villain some depth in the form of a back story should be to let the audience understand and empathise, and to raise questions about the morals of the hero if s/he finally kills them. I couldn't see the point of any of the exposition in this film. It would have worked fine as a typical fantasy action flick, no need to try and be something else.

I thought giving the Queen a background was much better than just having her be plain evil - and I don't think it mitigated her evil in the least. She still needed killing in the end, because even though she had a bad background - it wouldn't have surprised me if they had been implying that because of her looks, the Queen had been sexually abused as a child - she still made the choices that she did and it was obvious she'd given over to some dark magic at some point. Whoever that abused girl was mostly disappeared and the only thing left was her hatred and pain. Plus this was a two hour movie based on a fairy tale that maybe filled about two and a half pages of a storybook, they needed to flesh out the characters somehow. The only thing that left me dissatisfied was the explanation of exactly how Snow White was a threat to the Queen personally. She was a figurehead to the remains of her father's people and I got that she was threat like that but the personal threat to the Queen's life wasn't good enough. I loved Snow White and the Huntsman a lot together. It annoyed me that they had to make it into some kind of triangle though, freakin' hated that trend in TV shows and it was one of the many, many reasons I thought Twilight sucked. But the kiss at the end worked for me a lot and I hope I see more of the two of them.

Administrator Moderator Olympian Posts: 94542 07/04/12 10:14 PM Xena Studies Ph.D. Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I haven't seen this movie but it's kind of amusing that this shows up at the same time as the show Once Upon a Time (which I've been watching on Hulu Plus -- about to finish out the first season), which has the same premises: the Evil Queen as a more layered character who was basically an abused child, and an action-heroine Snow White who kicks some serious butt. (Unfortunately, I don't really care for the actress who plays Snow, Ginnifer Goodwin; really wish they'd given the part to Lucy Griffiths, Robin Hood BBC's Marian -- she would have been awesome.) Still, it's a pretty enjoyable show with some interesting character development and nuance.
