I think- I need to watch it again. It IS quiet, but it was there. I swear. lol. I wonder who first came up with "Xe" "Brie" and "Pony?" and more importantly...why? Like... why, if you were a big enough fan of the show that you want to write fanfic, would you want to start something so completely out of character? I don't mean to offend anyone who HAS used nicknames in stories - thinking on it, i can completely see why they might be used. Nicknames, especially ones used by a loved one, can tend to make the relationship seem more loving. Kind of a "Oh, wow, no one would ever dare call Xena 'Xe', so Gabrielle must be really special to be able to do that and not get bitchslapped." thing. But... in fanfic, when you have a kind of responsibility to stay true to the characters, i think there needs to be a point where you step back and say "Hmm, okay, i want them to seem closer, but i want to stay true to the show. So i should probably take out that bit where Xena calls Gabrielle 'Brie' and that other bit where Xena starts spouting poetry." Anyway, that's my rambling two cents. I think it was a way to humanize/bring the characters closer together... but it was one that went arse up, imo.

You can hear that line very clearly in Soul Possession in the flash back, in a Family Affair you have to turn the sound right up. In my view that has to be the only pet name that's used and only by Xena to Gabrielle in close quarters when no ones around. I have a feeling that popular authors used these pet names and that is how they got around because other fans picked up on them and it just spread through the fan fiction. Sorry to those of you that thought/think it's a good thing - but it grates on my sensibilities as a hardcore nutball.

It puts me right off the fic from the get go, even if otherwise written pretty decently. That's a big one for me to get past. And the ones where they random start calling each other 'babe' or 'baby?' ... yeah. No. you so know what i mea nhaha, theres nothing wrong with sexual but vulgar is just gross or something. ESP when they make the characters say that stuff i really cant and dont want to THINK about season 1 Gabrielle saying stuff like that shivers in a corner I dont have a big problem with the cutesey namecalling but then limited to sweetheart for example, babe is just.. too 21 century or something:P My Band \| My Music Vids \| My art

(yeah, and if I sum my posts in this thread up, it would probably turn out that I shouldn't read fics at all. well) Overdoing it. There's a better word for what I mean but unfortunately it's irrevocably lost in translation. It's basically like this: you read a sequel. And you just know it would be good, because the prequel is one your favorite stories and you love the author. And indeed, it is good - wording, narrative, plot, characters. Sex scenes. Everything. But. Apparently the author decided to raise the bar even higher in one particular aspect. In this case it happens to be sex. Well, ultimately, love and relationships with accent on sex. Really well written love scenes, if I have to be honest. Starting at page 11. And after 25 pages of love declarations and steam it really starts to bother you. At 124 you're like "What the ... ". Well. Let's hope the last hundred or so pages are really, really good. This novel needs redemption almost as bad as Xena did. ~ random graphics \| random lolz \| demotivators ~

More because I know this author is damn good and they are using this plot device to raise the bar. I'm not saying sex to raise the bar is bad far from it it, the late LJ Mass was a legend when it came to raising the bar on intimate sex scenes between Xena and Gabrielle. All these scenes were about the developments and changes in the two characters lives and personality's. The problem is I just see other authors writing sex scenes to raise the bar but the sex having no part in the story, its just sex for the sake of it. Its such a shame because it takes away from what can be a brilliant piece and its characters because I'm left wondering are they loving each other during this scene or are they just trying to get rid of built up sexual frustration?
