No, this is my first time.. Enjoying it so far, despite the disturbing subject matter ;P
As for the Russians.. I've already read War and Peace, and on my To Read list is Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov and Anna Karenina.. so i'm fully embracing what the country has to offer lit-wise. ;D

Have just started on "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe". Have seen the movie, but it was like 4 or 5 years ago, so I barely remember it.
And the book seems really good so far

I just finished Empress by Karen Fallon. Really, *really* good book; the portrayal of Hekat's journey from nameless slave-child to cruel, despotic
Empress of Et-Raklion is very well done and makes psychological sense every step of the way. Unfortunately, from Amazon, it looks as if the second book in the
trilogy isn't all that well connected to the first one; I'm a little hesitant about trying it, especially since the first book is logically complete as
it is.

I have given up on Middlesex by Jeffery Eugines. I swear, that is the hardest book to read! And now I am reading Harry, A History by the
webmistress of the Leaky Cauldron (It's Melissa something, I don't have the book on me right now). It is basically a book about the history of Harry
Potter, including the online - and offline - fandom of the franchise. If you love Harry Potter, you should check this out, it is a very interesting read so
far.

Lolita is another favorite. As for me -- finished Neil Gaiman's American Gods. It's very imaginative and well-written, but ... somehow I found it hard to relate emotionally to the main character. Not sure why. Some of my favorite parts were the "interludes" about gods, spirits, and other supernatural beings from various lands living in America over the centuries -- in some ways I actually found them more gripping than the main story. I'd like to re-read it soon, though, and see if I can get more into the main story this time. Also read Pelagia and the Black Monk by Boris Akunin (more Russian stuff!

I just finished Orlando by Virginia Woolf. I like it, a lot. I just wish I could have read it more leisurely and at a more relaxed
pace cause it is so filled with poetry and lines meant to inspire or at least make you think that you really need the time. It was hard candy, would have been
better to slowly suck it than the crunching I did. Still very interesting book and I was a little blow away how much Judith Butler must have been inspired by
this. Yeah, so if you're interested in either poetry and creativity or gender roles it's definitely worth reading.
Now I'm a little tempted to continue on with the modernists and give James Joyce a try. |
