A discussion in the Zone touched upon sexual education (and no, not all our threads are like that ) in relation to fanfic. Anyhow it got me thinking about it, and it would be rather interesting to know from where people got their sexual education and what they actually learnt in school. So lets talk about sex ed, baby. Lets talk about you and me. Lets talk about "receiving" and "transmitting" sexual education. What did you learn in school? Where else does your knowledge of things sexual come from? Did your parents sit you down and have the "birds&bees" talk? If so which one and at what age? How did you gain the knowledge you have today? Who should be responsible for sexual education? I've never really considered having kids, but if I do what's my responsibility as a parent when it comes to sexual education? What are the best ways of passing knowledge of these things on? I know it's a very personal question, but no-one forces you. However it would be interesting if you felt like sharing. I enjoy being a girl.

They just don't talk about anything in my house...Me personally I can hold a conversation about sex all day though I guess they left that up to the tv...that's 21st century for ya. School is supposed to be that 'abstinance only' thing which I think is complete bs, sorry but it is. Let's see how well that worked out shall we....my graduating class of 07....estimating about 70% of them were parents. I had some teachers that went out of the criteria to actually inform us on certain things though trying to help us. Then there were a select few girls that got picked out to be a part of a Plan a Parenthood meeting group thing which was in 7th grade, which I was apart of. Of course we had to get our parents to sign a form allowing us to be taught about certain things. When this meeting was happened to be the same time we all had Spanish class with a crazy teacher of course we'd rather be there and it was like our little secret group we called "the circle" lol. it reminds me of AA i swear. that's all we did pretty much sit there talk about ourselves and then the main person lead the conversations and whatnot. So I do have to give my school credit for allowing that. I think that's what they should have as an actual class instead of just having one group of people and that would benefit a lot. So I guess w/e I learned for the most part was from the media and peers, and then you just pick things up from there. I don't even know how old I was when I first learned about "sex". By the time basic sex education came round I already more or less knew the basics of sexual crap, my mother has never ever educated me really on sex ever, it's just uncomfortable to even think about it. Learned it all from romance novels, tv, kids at school, (though I didn't know what sex was untill middle school. I think I was pretty much oblivious to what everyone was talking about before then. Not to mention rather sheltered.), and one day, while cleaning viruses off my computer, discovering my brothers porn collection. Not reallly the best way to learn about it, IMO, but I wouldn't really want to have that talk with my mom either. Very uncomfortable would be an understatement.

My parents never talked to me about it and my school didn't have sex ed either. I say I learned all about sex from my friends. You could say that I was a tom boy but I could be very girlie. My guy friends always discussed it and I sorta learned from them. The guys always asked teachers and we discussed it in class, but that was supposed to be a secret. I guess my parents assumed I knew about the whole subject because everytime the word "sex" would be said, I didn't have the confused look on my face. Actually I never wanted my parents to talk about it to me...I already knew and that was enough for me. "Araina Faith"

My mom was very open and honest about all aspects, She sat me down quite young and gave me the full talk with diagrams and everything. You'd think that would be embarrassing but it wasn't. She made the choice to tell me young as most of my family got pregnant and married young. I credit my mom in that way, she helped me be the honest open person I am today nothing is taboo with me. School gave us a limited talk but by that time I knew everything in theory anyway I hadn't practised the deed just yet. I believe it is a parents responsibility to give a child the power of knowledge it equips them better against pregnancy or disease. So hence, in the 5th grade I was "schooled" on the birds and bees. It happened again in high school (note, you don't teach sex ed to a bunch of high schoolers and expect them to behave appropriately. Warrior Posts: 352 (07/24/08 6:18 PM) Xena Wants to Be Me Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	My parents are very open and thus gave me an open education : when I was little my dad used to bring me to naturist beaches to teach me how to swim; my parents walked nude in the house and they always told me that my body was not "dirty" and that it was ok to see mum and dad naked or to be naked in front of them but that my body was mine and not to be touched by anybody in an inappropriate way and that saved me twice from child abuse when I was about 9 (one from a guy who followed me and tried to trap me in the hall of my grandparent's building, the other from my dad's father ( I can't call him grandfather, he died a long time ago and nobody regrets him)); my dad had a big collection of adult magazines such as Playboy and I was allowed to read them if I wanted, which I did when I was like 15. To sum it up, what was about the body was not taboo in my family, it was natural. My mum explained me rather early all about menstruation as I found her pads once and asked her what it was. Instead of eluding the question, she told me what is was about, in terms I could understand. Maybe my parents told me about sex, I can't remember. But I know they never told me about the bees At school, I never had sexual education, except my first year in junior high school, when we studied how a child was conceived and watched a tape of a baby delivery [is that the good word ?] as a conclusion. I must admit this disgusted me, I was just 12... All in all I don't really know how I got my sexual education before experiencing it that is

Never had any kind of sex talk with either of my parents. I'm sure hormones and puberty and all that was discussed a bit with my mom when I started my period, but don't recall that. All Dad ever said about it, classy fellow that he is, was once when I got one of my spontaneous bloody noses: "soon you'll be bleeding from both ends" or something like that. rolls eyes I am so. very. glad. he never felt the need to have some sort of sex talk. We did have sheep when I was a little kid and always had cattle and dogs and cats and stuff, so did know a bit about the basics, just by being around it. Score one for the farm life. I know we had sex education in middle school, 7th and/or 8th grade, but don't remember much about that either. I think it dealt more with the....physical aspects of the body and hormones, than actual 'sex' stuff. In high school, that was gone over again, and then some videos about sex and the dangers of STDs and the risk of pregnancies. The one that sticks the most in my mind talked about the myths around sex. Like that people actual thought pregnancy couldn't happen if it was just once or your first time. Or if you did it standing up or the girl wore high heels. The whole class was WTF? about those ones. Perhaps again, score one for the farm kids and living in a rural area. LOL! Oh.... I distinctly remember watching a program on birth when I was in 8th Grade. It was in a science class, I believe. And I definitely got a....new perspective on the whole thing, to say the least. As for sex ed, I don't recall ever talking with my parents about such things. I think I just learned from example around me and I had the mind not to make the wrong choices about that sort of thing. And my parents trusted me to make the right kinds of choices. I don't think that was ever a worry for them. And plus, it was never really something I thought about during school. Maybe it had to do partly with the kind of people I decided to make friends with, and all of them were all pretty much like me. So I really don't remember it being a subject of conversation all that much; it was uncomfortable to talk about sometimes. There was a class that we took in 11th grade called "Personal Survival" (no idea why they decided to call it that) but anyway, we learned about pregnancy and prevention and such there. Though, I always did wonder why they waited so late to teach kids about that kind of thing because by 11th grade, if they're doing it, then they're doing it and telling them to stop at that point in their life doesn't really work. We had "the talk" about menstruation and she gave me a little booklet to look over. I think that had sex stuff in it. We talked after I looked it over. I don't remember how much "the birds and the bees" talk there was. I do know that I was glad to have the talk early once my "monthly friend" started at age 11 - otherwise I would have freaked out! We didn't learn about sex and our bodies in school until the 8th grade. High school biology again touched on it, and so did Health class (that's where we saw videos on birth). I guess the most detail was given in health class but by then, there wasn't much that my classmates and I hadn't already figured out. Battle On, I'm through accepting limits, 'cause someone says there's so. Some things I cannot change, but 'till I try, I'll never know.

I have so many pics of me running around nekkid until the age of 3 or so. I used to go skinny dipping in a friends pool with my grandma and all the cousins. I was a bit shocked at first but soon enough forgot that we were all nekkid and had fun! My best friends mom told us all about periods, and I know we had sex ed in school, though I don't recall the years or details. I don't recall any sex talks with my parents, but my mom was fairly open about stuff. Between cousins, playing truth or dare with friends, books, (Clan of the Cave Bear!) MTV and other media, I pretty much knew all about sex by 6th/7th grade. My friends in Jr High and High school did talk about sex, and some of them were having sex, but I was a virign on my wedding night. Actually, I do remember one girl who was pregnant and even saw her in the halls a couple of times. She was one of the really popular ones, I think, perhaps even on the cheerleader team. Don't remember much but I do remember seeing her around at times... Other than that, it didn't seem to be that big. That's where I got the mechanics. As for the non-mechanics parts, I was bored one summer at my grandmother's and picked up a book called Passion's Fury, and gathered the rest from the passages I read while hiding behind my pillow. lol From then on, it ws historical romances and really cheesy movies like Bo Derek's version of Tarzan. It's a wonder I didn't grow up completely warped.
