Lets do a little analyzing of Gabrielle lines from Sins Of The Past -- "You know I'm different from everyone else in this village" and "I'm not the little girl my parents wanted me to be." How did you interpret those lines? Have your interpretation changed? Have you changed? Vote, and share your thoughts on the matter. What does she refer to in those SOTP lines? (Result) 1. She's talking about adventure, knowledge, independence. 2. She's talking about being sexually different (and knows it). 3. She's talking about being different, but doesn't know it stems from her sexuality. 4. She's talking about no. 1, but my gut reaction was sexuality. 5. Other (specify).

I don't think she was talking about sexuality at that time. Even after re-watching the episode several times and knowing about the subtext, I still believe that she was simply talking about leaving behind the dull village life and this guy that she didn't (couldn't) love. But I think that the meaning could have later, if the entire series were seen as one long story, drifted to 3. I'm almost certain that adventure, knowledge, independence is what was intended at the time that the episode was written. But after the subtext was firmly in place, in hindsight, a 3 could be read into it. True especially when the "I'm different" comment is taken together with Gabby's rejection /description of Perdicus. But when originally done, I think it meant 1.

Like I said over on the other thread, I don't think she probably meant or knew her desire for freedom and independence was connected to her sexuality. Eventually, I think it became clearer. Many of us who are sexually different desire escaping the confines of our lives when we're young because there is no place for us. At least that's the way it was for me. I wanted as far away from my small town as I could get because I knew that was the only way I'd be able to be myself. I didn't know though until later that that need for escape was connected to my sexual identity. That's probably why I identify with Gabrielle so much. WITHOUT GABRIELLE, THERE WOULD BE NO XENA!!! But taking the subtext into consideration now it would have been a mixture of 1. and 3. You gota love the subtext surrounding her little remark about 'being different and not the little girl her parents wanted'. Yep even Ren and Lucy didn't see that one coming. lol Our Gabby does say a lot about her love for xena all the time and expresses it, but our xena is a little more stoic and less vocal. Although i think Lucy portray the subtle undertones of jealousy and internal acing to be with Gabrielle brilliantly. I ask you were was the subtext in 'Return of Calisto' surely that kiss between the two was as 'main' as day.

I don't think she was aware of her sexuality at the time and probably felt different without knowing all the reasons why. It's just there were concrete differences of wanting to travel and be a bard that gave enough reason for what she said in SOTP, and probably would have been there regardless of her sexuality. Warrior Posts: 245 (06/09/08 11:34 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I voted for one as well, and while I think xxdecrepitxx was spot on in describing why (and thus no need for me to similarly spiel! ), I can empathize completely with calliopes muse's P.O.V. too (thus option 3). But at the same time, I can't speak Gabrielle's character at that stage in her development. She's 17 (roughly) and fairly ignorant and naiive (think being 13yrs old all over again). Her motivations are unclear, and since she seems all too eager to find some rugged dude to shtoup in season 1. I think her motivations had to be, at least in her head, non-sexuality driven. It's difficult to answer this question now that I think about it. Was Gabrielle's behaviour (her leaving home, joining Xena, wanting to shtoup strange men) a part of her wanting to grow up as a fully accomplished and experienced woman? (just like her hero, Xena?) Or was her behaviour the need to find her identity through her interactions platonic and sexual, with others? (thus explaining why she needed to leave home to find accomplishment and why she needed to lose her virginity to some dude to figure out her orientation?) It did sound like a typical coming out story. As someone who didn't come out, even to myself until I was married, divorced, with two children, at the age of 25, I can relate to that feeling- knowing you are different, that you aren't what your parents or friends expect from you, but not quite understanding why. I don't think she was concious of it at that time though, no. I started rewatching the show when I was 19 and I was myself in a period where sexual freedom occupied large parts of my brain. Hearing those lines made me laugh a little bitterly (because I had yet to tell the world) as I established that neither was I. There are some clear sexual undertones in that statement and calliope pointed out, if your sexuality is different you most likely will want to live outside of the box and thereby making you different in all sorts of ways not necessarily connected with who you love. But at the time I don't think writers, actors or characters meant it as anything besides a quest for adventure.

It was only later on that she fully understood her feelings for Xena and what they meant. I think that is true of both Xena and Gabby. I mean you can't love some one straight away, at least i don't think so. I think first Gabby was just so impressed and enthralled by Xena's fiestiness and passion. Xena was intrigued by Gabrielle's innocent and loving nature, with no hint of judgement or fear about who she was. Then as the show went on the plot thickened and out popped the subtext and flirtation with it. Not that I minded, on the contrary. lol

The thought of her meaning her sexuality has never crossed my mind before. Neither does the words to any greater lengths send me thinking about what she could have meant now. The scene (imho) speaks of her wanting to find herself and all her want's and need's in life, which does include but is not limited to her sexuality. I don't think she had a clue at that specific point, but it might have been a sort of wakeup call, for sure. Basically because her curious spirit is mixed up in there, but I don't believe she realises it's tied in with her sexuality. Whilst it is obvious she is different in other aspects to the rest of her village, just being different, even if it is in sexuality as well, has led her to believe she is different and feels no longer a part of the village. It seems also obvious to me that, even if she doesn't acknowledge it for the attraction it is straight away, there is a solid reason for her saying this to Xena in particular and following her out of the village despite warning. But I do not think she knows anything about her sexuality as of yet...I mean she may not have had anyone to teach her about it so far NO GABRIELLE, NO XENA! I understood Gabrielle meaning she was different then the community she lived in. She wanted adventure, go to the places the passing bards had told about in their stories. So, she could live them as well. I took alot of adventures when I was younger for some of the very same reasoning. That's how I took it when I saw SOTP. wlfy
