Xena & Hades' relationship |
Lead | |
|
I was watching IS & Hades seems rather unconcerned about Xena's problem, even going so far as to say it's her fault. Now, correct me if I'm
wrong, but I could've sworn Xena saved your sister and got you your precious helmet back, not to mention your domain, while asking for very little in
return, yet you can allow her a few days out to stop Callisto (I know the real reason was for drama) and give her her body back? But he does seem very kind
& caring in the opening of AITSTs, possibly because Xena manned up and did what the other gods should've done: stopping Hope, Dahak, & Ares. So I
ask what do you think was the nature and the extent of Hades and Xena's relationship?

Great question, toxic! I know some people have criticized Xena for turning on Hades during the Twilight after he had been so friendly to her in the past, but I
really don't think she owed him any major favors ... it was more like the other way round. You're quite right, considering what she'd done for him
he could have been much more accommodating in Intimate Stranger. Even in Sin Trades, he's willing to arrange a meeting for Xena with
Solan but he doesn't really seem all that empathetic.
I think Hades was shown as a kind of bureaucrat god. He's not a bad sort really, but his main concern is that correct procedure must be followed. Tartarus for the bad, the Elysian Fields for the good. You've been judged once, your judgment stays, no matter the mitigating circumstances. If you've been assigned a slot in Tartarus then someone had better fill that slot even if it's the wrong person. And so on. I don't think he has a whole lot of concern for the welfare of mortals.

I had no idea people had a problem with Xena turning on Hades. I think your analysis of him is spot on, but I find it funny that someone who doesn't care
about mortals should be deciding where they end for all eternity.

The minute I saw Hades' behaviour in GFC, I suspected he was an ingrate. At that time, I was just getting into watching the show. After I saw Seasons 1 and
2, I wondered if the role would have been written in GFC had Thompson still played Hades.
Considering how Xena had saved Celesta in DIC, and Hades' crown in MB, I really think that when Hades received Solan, he should have offered to restore him to Xena. So, when he got torched in MH-no tears from me. I just wondered who'd take over. |

At the very least, you'd think that in AITST Hades would have tipped Xena off to the fact that her kid had chosen to be in Tartarus. Though admittedly at
that point, TPTB themselves didn't know about it yet.
I do think the Greek gods, in mythology, were very strongly committed to the idea that death -- for mortals -- should be final. (In contrast to the Xena PTB. I'm not sure if this mindset was due to a general sense that the rules must be respected, or to the view that mortals need to know their place. You know, let a few cheat death and next thing you know all hell will break loose.

I had a big problem with Steven replacing Erik, because he essentially wiped the characters' history clean and Hades bore nothing but animosity against
Xena. If it were Erik in the role, I'm certain he would have argued with TPTB to be conflicted over fighting against Xena. His overall demeanour is much
looser, friendlier with Xena than Steven's aloofness.
Out of their hands, but I believe this is what hurt whatever previous rapport or relationship Xena had with Hades.

I keep forgetting, was it the old or the new Hades in AITST?

Old, Erik. The Twilight arc was all Steven.

i actually agree with that. Erik is known for becoming attached to his characters and going into bat for them, he did it for his character in the Australian
drama All Saints. the fact that someone new was playing hades made it feel less real, like a different 'person' was there, not Hades. Stephen's
Hades was cruel and vindictive and he showed no glimpse of concern or niceness, i guess.
I agee with LadyKate, Hades is a stickler for the rules, which i understand totally, and Xena had cheated death before, maybe he felt he couldnt allow her to evade the rules and procedures anymore. Honestly, i would feel the same thing, there's only so many times the rules can be bent without being broken.

Well for all we know Stephen was just doing what he was told to do and the change in attitude was another pathetic 5th season writing blunder that attempted to
cover up the past. Stephen was excellent as Phlanagus but terrible as Hades, can't see it being entirely his fault.

Yeah, but as toxic is pointing out the original Hades isn't exactly all heart in Intimate Stranger.
